Johnny Bobbitt is back under a bridge just months after a couple raised $400,000 for him — and then reportedly kept it.
It seemed like an American Cinderella story: when New Jersey resident Kate McClure ran out of gas in a “sketchy” neighborhood in Philadelphia, 35-year-old homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt offered her his last $20 dollars for gas, which he went and fetched for her himself.
McClure and her boyfriend Mark D’Amico respondedraised more than $400,000 in Bobbitt’s name. This, however, is where the story gets ugly.

Rather than putting the money into trusts, as was explicitly stated, the remaining $200,000 is held in one of D’Amico’s savings accounts. While Bobbitt lives under a bridge, McClure has purchased a new BMW and taken vacations to California, Florida, and Las Vegas — all, she claims, on the salary of a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
D’Amico has admitted to spending some of the money raised for Bobbitt to gamble but insists he paid it right back to the account. McClure and D’Amico bought Bobbitt a vehicle but kept it in their names so he could not sell it; however, they have since sold the vehicle themselves.

D’Amico is unconcerned with the public reception to his and his girlfriend’s actions. “Write what you want,” he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” he added.

Sounds like D’Amico should be going to prison. Unless he used 10K and donated to the democrats, then he should be golden
If we had an FBI and the justice department, this is clearly wire fraud across state lines.
Could have been a scam from the start. And the homeless guy was just a paid pawn in all of this.

Who would ever drive through the bad part of philly? She lives in NJ and works in NJ, I don’t understand why should would even be there.
Only a dumbass would voluntarily give money to someone named D’amico from New Jersey.
The Internet has made scams like this pretty easy and common.
You just have to come up with a moderately convincing story, then get it to go viral - that is the hard part- and rake in the money.
There's so much at play here but primarily Bobbitt, the homeless guy, was and continues to be a drug addict, burning through the money others raised for him, stealing from them, and generally being a acrimonious pain in the ass.
Liberals think that homeless people are simply down on their luck and that a financial windfall is all it takes to get them back on their feet. Bobbitt used the money and gifts that this couple raised for him to buy more drugs, at one point spending $25,000 in one week on drugs.
And then there's the whole GoFundMe phenomenon that seems to lack accountability when it comes to raising money for some cause and then spending it how you wish. The couple who started a Bobbitt's GoFundMe account found themselves suddenly inundated with nearly a half million dollars! Suddenly, they were't overly enthusiastic about parting with it either, much less giving it to a drug addict.
Can't say I blame them.
Heck with $400,000, you could buy him a cheap basic condo to.live in, get him off the streets, and still have some money leftover. Something is fishy about the story.
Without hearing the rest of the story, it seems as though Mr. D’Amico is a shyster. Why did they not shut it down when they reached the goal? Temptation grows exponentially with every added grand.

I never give money unless I know the person personally and he can prove that he won’t spend it frivolously.
At the very least, there should have been some record showing all three of them making an effort to get Bobbitt ‘clean’.
If Bobbitt failed and back on drugs again, the remaining money (who knows how much there is) held in a trust fund.
Can’t blame Americans growing more and more cynical every day.
Or you could buy yourself something really nice, a house and a car, maybe gamble some if it, and give him nothing. The last time you gave him money, he blew it on drugs. Why give him more?
That's the nice thing about controlling GoFundMe accounts for other people. It's not your money. It's not their money. It's just money that strangers gave and as long as GoFundMe gets their share, who cares?

The problem is that 200K is missing and another 200K is sitting in D’Amico’s bank account.
The truck and camper that was bought for the homeless vet was still in D’Amico’s name and they sold after three months of “giving” it to him.
The homeless vet claims they gave him a small part of the money to gamble at the casino, but had to pay it back, which he claims he did. So who’s money is this? D’Amico’s or the Vet’s?
D’Amico promised the money would be put into a trust account, but it never happened. D’Amico is driving a brand new BMW, has taken numerous trips around the world, not bad for some guy with a basic government servant salary.
Sorry, even though the Vet is a drug addict, 99% of all homeless are, it was money raised for him, not so D’Amico can have a slush fund at his disposal.

D'Amico set up the GoFundMe account and manages it so, technically I suppose, it's his money.
That's the point I was trying to make about the lack of accountability with GoFundMe. There is none. And then the person who sets up the account find themselves overwhelmed with way more money than they asked for, human instinct and greed kicks in, combined with GFM's lack of oversight, and you have situations like this.
Basically, everyone involved here are a bunch of dysfunctional dirtbags and then a giant pile of free money that nobody really worked hard for gets tossed in to the mix.
We've all seen those stories where someone is trying to raise a modest sum for someone else's misfortune, then the story goes viral and hundreds of thousands of dollars flow in, way more than was originally intended. Everyone now wants a cut, sometimes a very significant cut.
