Perhaps I’m being unfair, but I wonder if he sees this as pretty much a Christian/non-Christian thing. When he’s with Republicans maybe he feels like they all expect him to go to Hell while they smugly go to Heaven but when he’s with Democrats he is somehow comforted by the fact that everyone in the room just expects to be turned into worm food, with no judgment at all.
I’ve known a lot of Liberals with seriously flawed views of Christians/Conservatives.

He’s brilliant, often wrong, sometimes right, and always willing to discuss things in a civilized manner, which is more than I can say about a lot of people.
