From its bamboo floors to its rooftop deck, Clayton Homes' new industrial-chic "i-house" is about as far removed from a mobile home as an iPod from a record player.
Architects at the country's largest manufactured home company embraced the basic rectangular form of what began as housing on wheels and gave it a postmodern turn with a distinctive v-shaped roofline, energy efficiency and luxury appointments.
Stylistically, the "i-house" might be more at home in the pages of a cutting-edge architectural magazine like Dwell an inspirational source than among the Cape Cods and ranchers in the suburbs.
The layout of the long main "core" house and a separate box-shaped guestroom-office "flex room" resemble the letter "i" and its dot. Yet Clayton CEO and President Kevin Clayton said "i-house" stands for more than its footprint.
With a nod to the iPod and iPhone, Clayton said, "We love what it represents. We are fans of Apple and all that they have done. But the 'I' stands for innovation, inspiration, intelligence and integration."(continued)

Mobile homes are now chic?
Well, I live in one, so they must be, right?
Millennial White Trash.

You’re a trendsetter.
Me Too.
And it’s mighty cute.
Looks like small scale chic to me. Whats not to like?!
It comes with wheels. Just sayin’.
That doesn’t look small scale. That is a pretty decent size dwelling.
I’ve been considering selling the house because there is just no need for all the space we have now, and we are getting too old to be doing the maintenance. Some of the current alternatives to trad mobile homes are quite attractive, but I’m a bit concerned about quality/longevity, as we may need the thing to last for 25 years.
If these are modular, then they may be on to something.
Advancements in architecture and technology makes it possible.
Manufactured homes can be built to a higher quality because they are designed in a controlled environment and built quickly on site, so any inadequacies due to changing weather is pretty minimal.
I live in Indiana and the climate here is hard on them. I am in the restoration business and see what happens to them if they get wet inside. Its not pretty. I have met many retired couples that thought they were downsizing and simplifying their lives. They feel silly now. Unfortunately I havent met anyone that survived a tornado in one.
Ever seen a wall framed in msg 1x3s?
Mdf 1x3s. Auto spell.
