Mike Rowe said that there is profound disconnection between Americans, and its this gap that drives the division in the angry discourse over politics.
Frustrated people are talking past each other
Rowe was responding to conservative commentator Ben Shapiro on his show about the widening gap between different classes of Americans.
Weve become slowly and inexorably and profoundly disconnected from a lot of very basic things that when I grew up, I was really connected to, he explained, like where my food comes from, and where my energy comes from.
A basic history, a basic curiosity, you know, he continued, the things that fundamentally allow us to assume a level of appreciation that in my view is the best way to bridge those gaps.
When we start to lose our appreciation for those things, the gap deepens, he added.
I think theres great common sense thats still alive and well in a lot of people, Rowe explained, and I think that as they look at the headlines, theyre frustrated, and to be fair I think that people on the coasts are coming it with their own bias. And theyre frustrated.
And so a lot of frustrated people are talking really loud, past each other, and a lot of truths are inconvenient for a lot of people, he concluded. And so it just gets noisy.

Yes, I’m a fake elitist. I’ve been found out.
Yup, there are lots of conservatives who are not paying attention...unfortunately.
Well said post.
I’m blue collar, a non-union electrician, if I like Mike what exactly am I missing ?
Because diversity disconnected us, by design: Non-European immigration without assimilation.
Kennedy. 1965.
Heres my take on Mike Rowe. Hes in show business. He has a background working in construction, namely carpentry. So, hes the real deal. He has a gift of connecting with real people doing manual labor jobs of all kinds. He is self effacing and downright funny at times. That has made him a celebrity.
Mike is a patriot who loves the military and first responders. He is personally involved in several efforts that advance technical and hard skills training vs. traditional college education. He also highlights those who selflessly serve their communities and gives back in very unique ways.
That being said, Mike’s in the business of entertainment, but unlike most of his peers he really attempts to stay out of the political realm. Hes pretty consistent about that posture, although its pretty evident in his actions that he is right leaning.
Unfortunately for Mike, playing down the middle and attempting to stay neutral with the left is a dead end strategy. He takes a lot of unwarranted heat from the left, despite his best efforts to stay out of political skirmishes.
THANK YOU so MUCH for sharing this...I’m amazed that there are FReepers that don’t like the guy...but then again, FReepers are human too with weaknesses of ignorance and stupidity.
Youre welcome.

I would have to agree. Your assessment is intriguing to me...now I will make sure I check him out. I see he has what appears to be two different podcasts, so I subscribed to both.
This is one of the more hilarious ones involving harvesting GeoDuck Clams.
Spoken like a true liberal...I don't recall hearing conservatives using that phrase.
Bttt
Thanks for posting that link :)
I’m not good at finding or posting links, but toward the end of the series, there was one about a monkey that had them trapped in a compound, we thought was the funniest ever.
Does anyone remember that one?
Wow, great interview with a great American.
Thanks for posting :)
Rowe has a youtube thing out there (from a graduation speech?) about “following your passion”. No - follow what you do well!
Mike tells the story of how his “passion” was to be a woodmaker like his Grandfather - making furniture, art, etc. Except that he was REALLY lousy at it! IIRC - what he WAS good at was singing - and he became an opera singer or something. And I suppose his good voice got him into radio/TV.
Ok, you’re NOT entitled to your opinion. Does that make you feel better?
To be honest, I’ve never really thought about your feelings.
I’m heartbroken! :-)
