Best Action Movies of All Time
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 7/24/2018 | C Cocoles

Posted on 07/24/2018 5:55:04 AM PDT by w1n1

The best action movies tend to be the ones where we get a little substance to go along with the shooting; some battles are realistic some not. This list has some of the most awesome action films of all time.

This list of greatest action movies ever has a mix of one man renegades (Die Hard), extraterrestrial thrills (Alien), and science fiction dreams brought to reality on the big screen (Terminator, Jurassic Park).

You'll even find some great comedic performances among the gun fights, smack talking, and explosions. Heck, you could probably fill a New Jersey size dump with all the stuff that gets blown up in these action films.

The list covers a broad time range as well with nearly as many classic action movies making the list as newer, big budget CGI action-fest.

We added a few that aren't on the list but the gunfight choreographs are good and realistic. For the the serious gunfighter movie-goer understands some movies get their gunfights right and some not so good.
This is a fan ranked list compiled from Reddit and Ranker, not based from IMDB. Here's what we have:
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
The Matrix
The Terminator
The Dark Knight
Aliens See the rest of this Best Action movies here.

Where Eagles Dare

The Eagle has Landed.

For Your Eyes Only (lots of Bond action, not a lot of gadgets)

Red Zone Cuba (but only if it has the MST3k treatment, otherwise it is a totally dogs dinner of a movie)

I think Jet Li’s best was Black Mask, with the Kato uniform and all the one liners.

And the one where he wore a dog collar. I forget the name now. But that was a good one too.

Jet Li made some badass movies.

An expanded format...but “Band of Brothers” should be Numero Uno on that list. It...affected me.

Black Dynamite

Saw a midnight screening of that a few years ago, and Michael Jai White was in attendance. The way the audience was reacting to the movie and talking back to the screen it was like a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

A very solid and hilarious action flick. And it's got the Captain Kangaroo Pimp!

Best war movie I’ve seen in years is “Brest Fortress”.

In Harm’s Way (1965). Very racy for a John Wayne movie.

The dance by Capt Eddington’s wife near the beginning was something else.

In contrast, the part where Patricia Neal slips off her shoes may be the classiest "implied intimacy" scene ever shot. Good movie - I just wish they'd spent a bit more money on the ship models.

One of my personal favorites, too. Watching Kevin Costner shooting at the cattle baron while he crouched behind the horse trough was awesome.

Flight of the Phoenix (both 1966)

Phoenix seemed more of a drama than a action film to me. A drama for guys though not the gals. Great film.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Here is what IMDB has to say about this 2003 movie:

In an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters team up on a secret mission.

Characters include Allen Quartermain, Dorian Gray, Capt. Nemo, The Invisible Man, Mina Harker, Tom Sawyer, Jekell/Hyde, and as the bad guy...James Moriarty.

Very fun movie.
