Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just buy new crayons?

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just buy new crayons?

A woman named Emily Skopov started a non-profit organization called No Crayon Left Behind.

The charity collects used crayons from restaurants and other organizations and gives them to people who can’t afford them.

When the collected crayons are misshapen, Skopov melts them down on her own stove and molds them into new crayons.

Skopov said she spends spends approximately 45 hours a week volunteering for No Crayon Left Behind.

In addition, she hired a consultant and has a paid staff as well.

She also rents an office.

Skopov said of her endeavor:

“I purposely haven’t kept track of how much I’ve spent because it would freak me out, but it’s got to be thousands of dollars.”

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart sells a box of 64 brand new crayons for $2.94.

So here’s my question: Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just buy new crayons?

[ First thing a liberal does is hire staff, an office, computers, supplies on taxpayers dime, then do the things they’re supposed to on the ten percent of funds that are left. ]

Funny story but if Hillary did win, one of my backup plans was to start a “liberal sounding” “Non-profit” that was partially funded by government monies for some dumbass invented cause and funnel that money back to patriot groups.

Thankfully I didn’t have to do that.

I think she is confusing “being busy” with “getting something done.” She’d get further ahead faster and be more efficient if she simply bought new crayons and gave them away.

Yes, it would be cheaper but you won't be 'saving the world'.

It's all about 'saving the world' (from billions and billions of perfectly good crayons clogging our landfills).

She can fool enough people, besides herself, into thinking that this is a worthy endeavor. The important thing is that she feels good about it.

True thing happened here where I and my folks live. There was a proposition regarding added property tax for the homeless and low income families. First thing on their agenda was exactly that: office, office equipment, hiring staff, supplies etc etc etc and then had the audacity to add to the proposition that it will end in seven years. Right. An add-on property tax that would be rescinded in seven years. When has any government rescinded a tax? If my information is correct, our phone bills are still being taxed five cents for the Spanish-American war; well maybe it has been rescinded but I've not heard of it.

BTW, the proposition was defeated by over 60% and this in a largely liberal county with mostly retirees on SS. The homeless and low income folks would have had better housing than the voters.

> gives them to people who can’t afford them.
[after writing this, it doesn’t sound like I meant it to. I would sincerely thank, and encourage her (and offer help if she wanted to expand her activities). And if she and a few people are happy with what she’s doing I wouldn’t criticize her though that’s it sounds like below. The world need more people like her.]

People who can’t afford crayons have more serious needs she could address with 45 hrs/week and thousands of dollars. My wife and I volunteer with homeless organizations and I don’t remember anyone ever saying “I wish my kid had a crayon”.

Reminds me of when “random acts of kindness” were the hot thing. Coworkers would brag daily about things like opening a door for someone or holding an elevator or complementing a stranger’s outfit/kids/whatever. They felt good about themselves but I always thought the “receiver” probably didn’t notice anything special and I considered these “normal acts of being a human”.

I did tell a few of these “randomly kind” people if they wanted to help the world rather than just feel good about themselves, they should practice “directed acts of kindness”. Find someone who needs help (i.e. direction for your acts) then help them even if/when it’s not convenient for you. None of them ever managed to find a Saturday night free to go serve dinner to the homeless though some did chip in a few dollars to buy larger items people need that the organizations we work with can’t pay for (e.g. car seats - people can have a car and kids but no home or car seats).

I’d guess this woman saw “unwanted crayons” and found a solution for them . As opposed to finding a need poor/homeless people had and finding a solution for that.

When my kids were very young we would melt old crayons, make them into candles, and they would give them as Christmas gifts to aunts and grandparents.

It was a lot of work-——for me. :-)

Exactly. And the ones who really cannot afford them are in some government (taxpayer) funded day care or school, and have access to all the crayons they can use.

I suggest she go to all the elementary school classrooms on the last day of school each year! Think what a haul she could make, when the kids are cleaning out their desks and cubbies.

Yeah, I am sure that if Hillary had been elected that there would be a vast upswing in the number of “NON-government Organizations” that would actually be “De-facto arms of the welfare state” operating “tax free” and off “grants” and that our side would “play fair” in a street fight and get our asses kicked and the only way to defeat them would be to “bleed their resources dry” by acting as a “leech on a leech” that then acted as food for the poor host animal.

Only liberals would take a voluntary busy work job that children do and try to make it into a tax payer funded excuse for government program...

I don’t remember anyone ever saying “I wish my kid had a crayon”.
I have however read of a child being asked for a wish, and giving the response “a pencil.” A budding, frustrated and impoverished scholar.

You don't understand. She melts all the colors together, mixing them for diversity's sake. When she's done there's only one color left. She transforms many crayons into a crayon.

On its website, Crayola is offering a back-to-school special: $7.55 (regularly $8.88) for 4 ct Crayons - 24 boxes per case pack. Each box contains one red, yellow, green, and blue crayon. That satisfies the needs and desires of 99% of children. Free shipping on orders of more than $40.

For $5,000, she could make the lives of 15,894 children a bit happier. I wonder how many thousands of dollars in products Crayola gives away to charitable causes each year anyway.

Bottom line: Get a real job.

First thing a liberal does is hire staff, an office, computers, supplies on taxpayers dime, then do the things they’re supposed to on the ten percent of funds that are left. apply for a government grant, build a web site, and advertise her enterprise on social media, including T-shirts, mugs, tote bags and a "Donate Here" button.

Fixed it.

You’re making too much sense.

Just like the whole ban straws movement and redesigning the cups and lids to eliminate straws. It is sure to cost more than the straws and be less useful, but libs feel better about themselves and think they are saving the world.

Not only that, but right before school starts, many states have tax holidays where you don’t even pay the sales tax of them.
