Last night a man high on meth knocked on my front door. He was panicked and begging to come in because people were chasing him. I told him I was calling the police. He continued to try to get in for 3 min. Then he got into my truck and tried to hot wire it. Police showed up shortly thereafter. Police stated he was delusional and from another town.
I live in rural area that has zero crime or problems. I am sharing this because most leave their doors unlocked while they eat dinner or watch TV. And they dont have their guns at arms length. This man would have walked right through the front door. So......lock your screen doors as well as your front doors. Understand that those on mind altering drugs are not rational or predictable creating a whole new realm of danger.
Scary story. One of the reasons I like my neighborhood is there is no way drifters, grifters or druggies would find their way in here, unless they are family of a neighbor. We are on a hill, removed from bus routes and public highways, and in a jumble of streets with only one way in-out.
And be sure that you know the laws in your jurisdiction.
In most states you can not shoot a person just because he is pounding on your door or window. In those states it is assumed that you are in no danger so long as the bad guy is outside your home.
Once he comes through the door or window it is a different story.
In our state a guy went to prison recently because he shot through the door and killed a guy, a huge black guy on a dark rainy spooky night, pounding on his door like a wild man...a huge ex football player who was big enough to breach the door.
The guy had wrecked his car and apparently was out of his head from an injury. Not sure if that was ever determined, but he had wrecked his car and was injured.
So even though we have the castle law and he was so so huge as to be a threat, he was on the outside of the door and therefor not a legal target.
It is because I live in a rural area with no close neighbors that all my doors are locked all the time.
My truck is normally in the garage which is locked. If for some reason I have to leave the truck out, it is locked.
I really hate to do this but one never knows.
“...I can have an excavator at my very rural home in 15 minutes, but not the Sheriff.....”
Yeah. Ain’t that some crap. It’s about the same here, but in fairness, it is a long ways out here.
FWIW, it was the sheriff dispatcher that suggested pushing the couch up to the door that night. We were on the phone with her the whole time until they arrested the guy. She was as cool as a cucumber the whole time while I was about crapping my pants. She kept telling me how far away the units were, and I kept telling her every time he tried barging the door that I didn’t want to shoot this guy, but if he makes it thru the door, he’s had it. She told me to do whatever I felt I had to do to protect ourselves but the deputies were only so many minutes out. That 15 minutes felt like 15 hours. It ended pretty fast once they got here though, and nobody got shot.
After that, I upgraded the Glock’s sights, and I carry it with me everywhere, even here at home. My wife went out and bought/carries a 9mm CZ PO1 w/crimson trace laser on it. Don’t ask me why she picked that gun, but she loves it, and it’s pretty accurate, but it’s not my cup of tea.
This episode also got both of us off our dead butts and out to the range a whole lot more too. We even take that shotgun with us as part of our range practice. Hopefully, we won’t ever have to go thru anything like that again, but at least if there is next time, we’ll be a little bit better prepared than we were that night.
Death and taxes are true. So is when seconds count, the cops are just minutes away. Threat assessment and preparation are important. You sound like youre all over it. Stay safe.
Asleep or awake, I am either carrying a gun or have one close at hand. And I always lock our doors, whether we are in the house or not. It’s just the kind of depraved society we live in now. And whether or not we live in a “safe” area has no bearing. Because evil (and insanity) comes from everywhere now.
Tip: just let him think youre Heidi. Dont shoot him.
Depends on how he’s doing. ;-D
My son had a Belgian Malinoise as his police K9 dog. Lived with us. He put a “Beware of K9” sign prominently on our front fence. No problemo!
Nobody wanted to meet his other dogs “Smith”, Wesson, Ruger”, etc.
Agree 150 percent my FRiend !
Good advice - many wait until bed time to lock up and it could be fatal.
i lock everything all the time! My kids yell at me, as they are fumbling for their keys when they come over.
I also have a designated weapon in every room of my house just in case. I am at home alone so often that i am very attuned to any strange noises.
If anybody breaks in and gets past the dogs, I will beat the piss out of them until i can’t.
I said OK.
I didnt bother to tell her that I had 1911 with spare Mags and one in the chamber totaling 50 rounds in My Rolowalker if We needed to Stop a problem.🤪
Side note: My Podiatrist is semi-prepaired. He has a Pistol in His Office but not on his person. I told him that I had instant response in reach. He smiled and said good.
Our towns have to contract with the Sheriff for coverage; we have a gap from 2330 until 0630. One of the best things about our area - we’re friendly with all our neighbors and we back each other up. I’d call any of them first, just as they’ve called me in the past.
I also use a crimson trace and have a couple of night vision scopes; next up is a thermal.
>> Worst problem we have in the US right now I think, drugs of all kinds - from prescription to illegal.<<
Depends on your frame of reference. In my view the worst problem, by far, that we have right now are the millions of voters who are oblivious to the fact that they are being lied to and indoctrinated by a corrupted and often criminal Democrat Party, and the Party’s propaganda news and entertainment media.
>>When we first got our little dog, my husband worried a hawk or large owl would swoop down and get her. Now, shes so fat, it would break its neck, trying to pick her up.<<
Reminds me of a sad story. Retired couple were traveling across country in their camper and made a rest stop. The wife told her husband to let their little poodle run in the nearby grass for a few minutes. When she returned to the camper she discovered that an eagle had swooped down and flown off with their pooch.
>>I even carry a special insurance rider for such possibilities.<<
Would appreciate any info you can provide regard this. I didn’t know such riders are available.
Yep. If they’re small enough, they can.
It's a special risk category on my homeowners policy...similar to a "attractive nuisance" policy for swimming pools, etc.
It does cost more...see your agent.
I also have a policy through the NRA.
Call your NRA rep...they should be able to help for policies for being out and about while CCW...depending on your training and what State you live in.
I think mine is through Centurion?...not sure, but if you're a NRA member, they should be able to guide you in the right direction.
But as I said...they ain't cheap.
Good doggy ....
