Thank you RoosterRedux !
Five years after that evil car ran me and the bicycle down, my shoulders and upper body feel better than ever. Even my thumbs that had been broken are much improved. I've been on a bicycle, rollers and spinning, all this time and not much else since the accident.
The first three months doing moderate 5K &10k s most days and making friends with the beast. Having only cycled since my accident in 2012, just light therapy and range of motion upper body, I felt three months plus seemed like a good number for muscle recruitment. A typical day was one-two hours at 85%+ heart rate on the bike, then 5k and sometimes 10k rowing,
Then I started the 5K training program by Concept 2 AND using heart rate as a guide : https://www.fitness.marines.mil/Portals/211/Docs/PFT_CFT/PFT_CFT%20Standards/Training%20for%205K%20Rowing%20Ergometer%20Test.pdf?ver=2016-12-15-105509-990
The program was fun and kept my interest. Adding the heart rate monitor helps me see any improvement. The 8x 500 intervals are my favorite and was able to make a two minute 500 meter dash. Just one and I'm about done!!
Mostly it's the 5k and 10k for me, the half marathon coming soon, maybe.
Recently my brother purchased a rower, about the second day he was on it, he send a video asking about his form!
Using dual monitors, the C2 form demo on one, and my bro on the other, both running in slo-mo.
You can see everything. Previously I had asked many visitors to watch the C2 video and comment on how I look, also tried a mirror, not so helpful.
Using the video was VERY helpful, my numbers improved immediately,
I still watch your pal Cam's 2k Row and think of what he says as I row along. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5_4upqhYeQ&t=13s
Thanks DG
Ping.
Thank you RoosterRedux!
Don’t get the RoosterRedux part.
Don’t sell Rooster short. He’s a devoted Trumper, friendly and very helpful. The FIRST to say ‘hello’ to this one time newbie.
In no way did he sponsor this helpful ad.
Great to hear, Grunt. Good work!
Ping!
RoosterRedux has posted a few rowing threads that nudged me to purchase a rowing machine.
Also posted this enjoyable and inspiring video:

Try it you may like it.
Thx for the ping, VK. Grunt (he ain’t so dumb;-) and I used to talk of our love of rowing.
No, I just didn’t understand the RoosterRedux connection with what DUMBGRUNT posted.
But I like your assessment of RoosterRedux. Both he and you come across as nice folks.
:-)
I like that.
I live in Arizona, so even though I like it here, there’s not a lot of rowing that goes on around here.
Again thanks!

No water actually needed!
And after your workout, shower with a friend.
If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down!

I love doing intervals on the Concept 2 and found that interval work helped me increase my pace greatly. That said, in trying to get fast, I started getting lower back pain. I guess I was losing my form.
I have since slowed down and focused on pushing my heart rate up (and keeping good form). Also, I have added some lower back stretches which seem to have helped.
I also just bought an indoor trainer for my mountain bike (ordered a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine 2.0 from REI) to mix some indoor biking in with the rowing. I used to bike on a local trail, but traffic to the trail and at cross streets has gotten bad that I have given that up except on special occasions.
Bfl??
Big Fat Liar?
Body for Life?
Base Fatality List?
If the rower puts me on the fatality list, will be a big surprise.
That said, it did move my Max known heart rate (at age 69) up from 165 to 175. My previous max was on the bike using mostly legs.
The rower also works the upper body hard, not a big surprise. Typical across different exercises.
I guess I was losing my form.
The video was a huge help to me.
My brother used his phone and a stack of books, but the alignment was difficult.
I had an old Kodak zx5, in stock, with a tripod mount.
Works well, and I try to use the same arrangement as the C2 form video.
The improvements in my form made for better times at the same average heart rate.
I was surprised.
And good old pushups...every other day...as many as I can do in sets of ten.
The way things are shaping up...we old dudes may be the front line.;-)
I am getting ready. I am thinking that you are too.
I do wish, I had made that choice before 6 June 2012. (20 days hospital...)
I even moved my retirement date up to have an extra summer on the bike.
I had a hardtail for dirt, but my first choice was the road.
I made the wrong choice.
