That was according to my 8th grade history teacher-retired military. The only one who came close was MacArthur. That brings up the politics of the left. If it is true that Lee was a great General isn't it at least worth acknowledging? This tearing down of statues should stop. Educated persons should acknowledge the truth. It's the left that's the intelligent ones as they would have us believe. I see no conservatives standing up for this truth. The Senate GOP candidate in Virginia should start an 'intellectual' conversation on Lee and let the left react. Don't wait for a baiting reporter to to knee-jerk him into a quick response that they can interpret their own way.

And MacArthur was absolutely horrific, probably one of the worst generals we ever had.

The USA was founded and the Constitution ratified only because the southern STATES were assured that they could continue to own slaves.
Abolitionists forced the war and let loose a scourge that plagues the nation to this day.
Interestingly enough, the black population has held steady at 13% since the late 1700’s.

Those lower States wanted freedom from the high tariffs the North charged for raw materials. The lower states did not invade the North but tried to expel the Federalist forces.
Tariffs had virtually nothing to do with it. Defense of slavery was the most important reason for the Southern actions by a large margin.
Slavery ended peacefully in many other countries...
Other countries did not have regions willing to launch a bloody and protracted rebellion to protect their slaves.
If Opposition to slavery was an issue, Lincoln wouldn't have called for an amendment to make it permanent.

Like most commanders of armies, Lee was not not primarily a "field" commander (neither was Eisenhower). He would plan the campaign and leave it to "field commanders" to execute the actual battle. For example, Lee made the decision to divide his army and send Jackson around to flank the Federals at Chancellorsville. How he got there and what he did there was left to Jackson. Lee was constantly having to plan how to attack the enemy while not letting them over-run Richmond (Lee did not think Richmond should be the Confederate Capitol). When one looks at how many times Lee successfully divided his forces, he seems to be an audacious commander. Much of the time, with limited resources, it was all he could do.
Freer. Also the worst of what happened in the 20th century would probably have never happened.
Let me ask you this. If the situation was reversed, do you think that Lee would have hesitated for a moment to use the same tactics Grant did if he thought they would bring victory?

I admire Stonewall Jackson for imparting literacy and the teaching of Scripture to slaves in Sunday school - in secret. Jackson was both a product of his time and yet ahead of his time.
But still, I don’t share any Confederate sympathies. Doesn’t mean the “Unionists” were all angels. But their cause was righteous. And I believe it was in the sight of Almighty God.
Hmmm...did they? My family were New York City copperheads and one wrote a letter trying to get out of the Union Army. New York City was practically a Confederate stronghold! And of course you know about the draft riots there.

That was out of an assault mounted by three corps (about 36-40,000 men.) Lee lost 7,000 casualties assaulting Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg out of an attack force of 1 division and two additional brigades (about 12-13000 men). Grant is called a butcher for the assault at Cold Harbor. What does that make Lee.
