Over the past couple of days the subject of athlete activism, always present to some degree in American sports, but recently revived by Colin Kaepernick and a few other football players in the form of silent protests during the National Anthem, exploded into a headline dominating news story. Lighting the fuse: President Trump directly inserting himself into the controversy.
He did so during a speech on Friday night and during a series of tweets Saturday and continuing into this morning in which he urged NFL owners to fire or suspend players who do not stand for the national anthem. He also attempted to disinvite the NBA champion Golden State Warriors from their traditional White House visit because of their star player Stephen Currys public opposition to him, though Curry had already said he wouldnt go.

It’s been many years since I gave an obama about MLB, and I used to be a Yankees fan.
Glad to see the Yankees didn’t make it.
FO, CC. #youToo
Obviously he’s in the American League.
A National League pitcher knows better to keep their mouth shut.
Here’s to hoping US adult males start to give up the cult of professional sports, and kill the politics that comes with their fame and money.
Sabathia has always been ghetto scum. I sat behind a grouo of his family at Angels stadium back when he was with the Indians. They all looked members of the crips.
..and he needn't have worried. The Yankees didn't even make it to the World Series in 2017, never mind win it.
President Trump needs to end this silly and shallow practice of making a big deal about sports teams at the White House. Let individual cities hold parades and fall at the feet of their team members....it’s not a national issue, and it sure as heck isn’t important.
Exactly.
Sabathia is a good pitcher. However, he leans left on Trump and the National anthem.
Nothing a little chin music wouldn’t cure.
It’s an honor to visit the White House when you are national champions. It’s a privilege that should not be discontinued.
The left has destroyed most formerly-great American institutions. They are working feverishly to destroy sports, beginning with NFL and MLB.
That would cut the food budget in half for that meal . . .
Now that pro sports has been infected by politics, it’s metastasizing through sport by sport. And it isn’t going away.
The NHL is the last bastion of hope. At least if the Caps win the Stanley Cup, they’ll have no excuse not to walk a few blocks to the WH.
Like the Yankees would win the World Series.
If I were trump, I would tell all of the teams to stick it. Then I would start moving to lift the anti trust protection.
People forget that Trump was a founder of the USFL. He knows the scam of pro sports.
I am in this group. My patience is thin especially this year with the combination of Trump derangement and the a-hole athletes.
Who cares what CC Sabathia is going to do.
They are definitely one of the elite teams this year. I wouldn't put it past them.
