Automobiles: Hyundai to invest W419b (US $388M) to expand Alabama plant

Hyundai Motor said on May 30 it will invest 419 billion won (US$388 million) to construct an engine head production facility at its existing Alabama plant.

Engine heads to be produced at the Alabama plant will be used in new models of the Sonata and Elantra sedans. The head machining plant is scheduled for completion in November, Korea’s biggest carmaker said in a statement.

The Alabama plant will have further room to produce engine products in addition to its two existing engine assembly lines.

Hyundai plans to begin producing the Theta III engine for the Sonata sedan and the Santa Fe SUV in early 2019 in the southern US state. It will continue to produce the 2.0-liter Nu engine for the Elantra subcompact there, the company said.

The firm produces about 700,000 engines a year at its plant in Montgomery, Alabama, to support vehicle production there, and Kia Motors’ plant in West Point, Georgia.

But, will there be new jobs which pay crumbs?

One site shows the average factory wage in Montgomery is $9.48 per hour. Some site called “glassdoor” (looks like and employment type site with reviews of companies, etc.) showed that a “Floor Team Member” makes $25 an hour at Hyundai.

Regardless of what they actually make in wages, not sure how increased investment in the area will be a bad thing. If the folks don’t like working for peanuts, they can go back to their old jobs at the 7-11 or wherever.

That $73,000 in Montgomery is probably worth $140,000 in Seattle.

Heh. Median home price in Montgomery is $165,000. Median home price where I live is $880,000 east of Seattle. And if I worked and lived in Montgomery, I bet then I could even afford central air conditioning! (I’m guessing most of the homes already have it down there.)

Hyundai still has a class action lawsuit against it, since 2014, for oops-ing their MPG estimates for some cars from 2011-2013.
It’s tied up in the courts. The only ones who will get anything substantial will be the attorneys.

Every carmaker on Earth as lawsuits pending against it. If you find one that doesn’t, let me know.

I can testify that they make great Sonatas there. I've owned three so far. Much better vehicles than the old Detroit union made cars I've owned.

I’ve had a Santa Fe for years with relatively little trouble.

Getting a new engine at 60,000 miles in my Elantra due to rod bearing issue. Many others waiting in line. Previous recall over debris due to improper deburring. That 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty comes in handy—they are committed to U.S. customers. Sold a ton of Elantras and Sonatas due to hot design and mileage. Appreciate the new engine when it finally arrives. Free Santa Fe rental in the meantime.

50 new jobs. Hopefully not at taxpayer expense.

50 new jobs, at about $52,000 a year.

And no mention of whether or not AL sweetened the deal with other people’s money.

I had a Sonata from the Alabama plant 2008-2016. Just the 4 cylinder model. Very sluggish with the size of the car but great mileage on highway driving. Braking system was sub-standard. Overall a comfortable ride.

“It’s tied up in the courts. The only ones who will get anything substantial will be the attorneys.”

We own 2 Hyundai models affected by this suit. They’re talking about a minimum of $600 per vehicle being paid to us.

Good luck with that.

From the settlement people:
In January 2018, the appellate court ruled that the trial court should re-evaluate the settlement in light of differences in the law of each State within the nationwide settlement class. Additional appellate procedures are pending. As a result, it is currently unclear when the settlement will be re-evaluated and, if appropriate, become final.

I’m really not worried about it. Our vehicles get good mileage and whatever we receive will be a nice surprise.
