Republicans Need Artists, Not Economists
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 12, 2018 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 04/18/2018 4:18:40 PM PDT by poconopundit

Every month or so, WSJ publishes a Peggy Noonan editorial to stir up the Corporatist and Never-Trump animals.

This particular piece stretches the bounds of logic more than most of her rants. Still, for the sheer pleasure of relishing Noonan's monthly TDS rage, it's worth a quick scan and laugh.

A couple of her FReeper teasers:

Noonan's losing her grip on the writing talent. Parts of this editorial go off into tangents that are quite hard to follow. In that way, she's borrowing a bit from George Will's incoherence.

Toward the middle of the piece she finally gets to her main point: Reagan was an artist, and modern Republican have no artists.

And she paints Reagan as an artist because he was an actor and on radio for 40 years.

But I wonder Ms. Peggy, do you recall that Trump was the star of his own highly-rated TV show for 15 years?

Trump displays artistry -- and often humor -- every day in his fabulous tweets and his ability to cajole an angry NK dictator to calm down and come to the negotiating table.

No mention of that bit of artistic, eh Ms. Noonan?

And how about writing/selling many best-selling books, signing off on architectually splendid skyscrapers and golf courses. Can we find just a trad of artistry in those achievements?

It’s that time of the month when Noonan is having another TDS attack.

I recently read some of the things being said about Churchill by the opposition. You wouldn’t recognize the man from what they said. History has proven his opponents wrong. History will bury the anti-Trumpers.

Peggy Noonan trashed Sarah Palin during the 2008 election while off-air but the mic was hot.

This was covered extensively in the media and garnered 280+ comments on FR.

She tried to backpeddle but, frankly, ever since then Ms Noonan has been pretty comfortable as an out-of-the-closet RINO.

She is generally adored by NeverTrumpers, RINOs and other losers. She's best left to speak in her own echo chamber of Rockefeller Republicans while Deplorables fix the messes cause by her ilk.

The problem with Peggy is spelled O-L-D. She should go off and hang out with her grandchildren. Reagan was a long time ago.

Surely there's a difference.

It's no slap at Trump to say he's not as moving an orator as Reagan was.

It probably gives Peggy a great boost to her own ego to imply such things, but Reagan did give off more of a visionary vibe.

That may not be what Republicans need, but if it's what they want, Reagan certainly was better at it than any of his successors.

Agreed. Trump is not the orator, per se.

However, the words of his speeches, polished by Stephen Miller and others have been truly stirring on several occasions.

So there may be a little jealousy going on here. Ms. Noonan wants to preserve her own heritage.

Contrary to what she says in the story, I think Reagan would have reacted to the international trade theft going on today much like Trump.

Capitalism works when there’s a fair playing field. With currency manipulation and dumping of products, it’s a fast way to destroy America’s industrial might.

Trump sees this and has taken action for our long term benefit. Noonan is just plain wrong and lets ideology dominate any common sense she may have had.

Can honestly say that Noonan is deserving of as much personal precious time as Ann Coulter is given. Like two peas in a pod, one a bit older and a tad more wrinkled. One day soon we will cease to care.

Remembering when BO’B tossed himself into the mix and old Peg just went all ape and gaga over him. She’s yet to come out of the jungle.

Thanks, PP.

As an artist and professor, I am still trying to understand Peggy Noonan’s points. Yes, creative thinking is important (and, as was pointed out already, Trump shows out-of-the-box thinking every day).

But, seriously, even innovative artists in the GOP will not survive the real art world. You think that the academics are lopsidedly leftists, the art world is worse. Unless you paint images of GOP politicians, with red marks through them and “clever” words of character (like racist, misogynist, etc.), the works get no attention. One needs to have that leftist “cred” to be seriously considered.

That being said, if there are conservative artists out there who are doing interesting, innovative things, please let me know (via private reply if necessary). I am interested in all sides of art production and maybe conservatives artists could find a way to strike back.

When that artist thing gets out of hand, you get Hitler! Some have posited that if he hadn’t been rejected from art school, we may not have had WWII.
