A report says the nations seagoing branch will go with the smaller version of the Armys Modular Handgun System, the Sig M18, to replace legacy 9mm pistols.
The Navy currently uses the M9, a variant of the Beretta 92F shown above, and the M11, a more compact pistol based on the Sig Sauer P228. The new M18 will replace both. (Photo: U.S. Navy)
The Navy will phase out its current M9 and M11 handguns with the M18, the smaller-framed version of the Armys newly adopted handgun. The MHS winner, based on the Sig Sauer P320 family, can utilize two different-sized frames, the full-sized M17 and a more compact M18. While the Army is issuing the gun in a kit with both frames and one interchangeable plug-and-play fire control unit that makes up the guts of the handgun, the Navy will go with just the single M18 frame.
Navy spokesman Ben Anderson told Military.com that money has been allocated for contracting this year, with delivery to the Navy to commence in FY19 for some 60,000 pistols.
The Navy currently uses the M9, a variant of the Beretta 92F, and the M11, a more compact pistol based on the Sig Sauer P228. While the M18 is slated to replace both, there is no word on if other platforms used in smaller numbers by Naval Special Warfare units such as the Mk23 and Mk24 pistols .45ACP guns made by Heckler & Koch as well as various unit-purchased Glocks, and the Mk25 a navalised version of the Sig P226 in 9mm will be replaced by the new Sig as well.
All branches of the U.S. Armed Forces have placed orders for the M17/18 Modular Handgun System, according to Sig Sauer.
P365, it seems to me to be just about the perfect concealed carry gun. 10 rounds in a package slightly smaller than a Glock 43. Night sights included for $549.99
...and I’ll “but-back” all their Berettas for $75 per unit.
You are right, the Beretta did get the contract because of a lower bid.
Before that tho, they had won the tests. Finishing in a statistical tie with Sig and Smith & Wesson. Still the Beretta technically had fewer malfunctions.
The fact that the Beretta M9 is extremely reliable cannot be argued. It has been proven, both in the first tests conducted by the Air Force and later one by the Army.
The only pistol to ever finish tests with a perfect record was the 1911 Colt. Those test guns had been individually prepared by J.M. Browning. Overall tho it is probably not as reliable as those tests indicated.
Oops...
I’ll “buy-back”...
IIRC, and it may have been with early production guns rather than trials guns, there was a problem (on occassion) with the slide breaking, allowing the rear portion of the slide to strike the shooter in the face. Apparently they corrected that...
Spent some time in a navy shower, have ya? LOL
real kinky there.
I’m considering a Sig P238. Perfect self defense gun for an older female like me.
That slide breakage did happen but was extremely rare and only with guns which had been fired extensively with +P+ ammo. Beretta put in a fix so that if it did happen, the rear part of the slide would not leave the frame.
I’m old-school!
1911s and M-14s for all!
The Taurus version is a better gun at much reduced cost. Beretta putting the safety on the slide was a mistake Taurus corrected. ... You can accidentally place the Beretta on safe when grabbing the back of the slide to jack a round.
Too logical for demoncrats and republicants to follow. I like it though ...
It’s always a plus, when they identify problems (& fixes) early, rather than after they produce tens of thousands of units...
My first Beretta model 92 had the safety just like a 1911. That is the model which was licensed to Brazil. I liked it but there are safety benefits with the hammer drop.
Taurus did not improve anything. That is the way it was originally made. Those early Beretta’s also had the mag release on the lower left side of the grip. I liked it perfectly well but Americans like the current style.
You gotta love the way the practicle people here respond to this news. Whats going to happen to the 60000 old Berretas?
Exactly. Guess us regular folks could find a use for them and relieve part of the cost of the new Sigs.
<<I have larger than average hands
That’s why you like the Beretta. My hands are slightly larger than average, though my fingers aren’t. I’ve never really liked the feel of the 92 in my hands.
One brand that is always left out in these discussions is the H&K. I believe it trumps them all. Safer and almost as light as the Glock; more reliable than the Sig. Shoots as well as either.

The only one on my wish list for a duty size nine.
We just have to buy pistols small enough for women’s hands.
Buy American, damn it.
Everything CZ makes is nice.
I’m quite fond of my CZ82 ... carries nicely.
