In the United States, weve arrived at a pair of mutually exclusive convictions: that liberal, capitalist democracies are guaranteed by their nature to succeed and that in our Trumpist moment they seem to be failing in deeply unsettling ways. For liberals and by this I mean inheritors of the long liberal tradition, not specifically those who might also be called progressives efforts to square these two notions have typically combined expressions of high anxiety with reassurances that, if we only have the right attitude, everything will set itself aright.
Hanging on and hoping for the best is certainly one approach to rescuing the best of liberalism from its discontents, but my answer is admittedly more ambitious: Its time to give socialism a try.

We have been trying it and now we’re $20 trillion in debt.

Aletheia101:
We don't need private companies. Never did. Public non-profits can outcompete them on everything -- price, value, wages, working conditions, the environment. Everything.
Private, for-profit companies can't compete with them on any of that. Their need for profits and the desire to accrue vast fortunes for ownership renders that impossible.
I Tully:
Sounds nice but it has never happened anywhere.
Aletheia101:
It's never happened because the super-rich won't allow it. They protect their power, wealth and privilege at all costs.
But when we the people eventually wise up, that's all gonna end. The sooner the better. And if we wait too long, the Earth is going to make that decision for us.
I Tully:
Maybe we can at least agree that you're suggesting something that has never happened and has no track record anywhere in human history.
Aletheia101:
Yes, we can agree to that. Doesn't mean it can't work, though. By definition, when things are tried for the first time, they never had that track record, etc. etc. Obviously.

And there you have it - the insanity of the left: "We are the people we've been waiting for..."
When you can defeat a leftist’s argument with one word, it kinda shows the shallowness of their thinking.
Been a long, long time since I found the hot and crazy combination a turn on.
Yes. Because those type of people get in bed with the government and then rip the rest of us off - at government gunpoint.
Not liberal at 20 = no heart. Not conservative by 30 = no brain.
“democrat presidents since roosevelt have been trying.”
Check out Wilson. I think it started with him.
(Some say Teddy Roosevelt was. Other than calling himself a “Progressive” during campaigning I don’t know enough about his political decisions to form an opinion.)
National Parks. Inherently socialist
That I can see that by today’s definition of progressive but very different from Clinton’s land grab of our clean burning coal area making that a National Park in Utah to benefit (i.e. pay off) the Riady’s Lippo group.
I think the Roosevelt land seemed “worthless” as far as socioeconomically but a major benefit to future generations. I’ve enjoyed them much!!
Do you know of anything else he did that would apply to todays def of progressive? The only thing I remember about T.R. was he a sickly kid that went macho later in life. And he was really entertaining in “The Night at the Museum”. Lol! Like to learn more.
Also once commonly referred to as bafflegab...”Incomprehensible and/or pretentious language, especially bureaucratic jargon”...
Related to the old saw “If you can’t dazzle ‘em with brilliance, baffle ‘em with bovine excrement”...
Used by persons of average or slightly lower IQ possessing some credential or diploma, etc, often gained by nature of race or gender or any of the myriad other preference criteria, to demonstrate their intellectual bona fides to us lesser beings...
And prove thereby standing to lecture the rest of us and steer us to proper life path...
Exemplars especially abound in government, science, media, academe, and Hollywood...
Sad to hear. Hopefully his students are wiser than he.
