I’m not dead yet (vanity)
Me (A Vanity Post) | 2 March | Gunrunner—me

Posted on 03/02/2018 12:32:37 PM PST by Hulka

This vanity post describes my fascinating journey towards becoming a semi-cripple for the rest of my life.

A week ago last Saturday I was replacing smoke detector batteries in my home and fell off a ladder

I’ve been to war, flew fighters and was a Texas police officer and I make it through relatively uninjured, but falling off a ladder does me in.

Yup. That simple and that silly.

And all my fault.

There is a long recovery ahead, with full recovery not really possible.

I may need a walker, may need a cane for the rest of my life.

I changed my smoke alarms a few months ago to the new type that come with 10 year lithium batteries.

Prayers for your recovery and thanks for sharing your story, especially the parts on calling on the Lord. Doctors sometimes give the worst case scenario outlook so patients will be prepared. Plus there was one word that really stood out in your post - fighter. I have no doubt that through the grace of God, hard work in therapy and the help of good doctors you will be fully recovered. Keep us posted!

Thanks for your service to our country and wonderful testimony. You exemplify the American ideal. Sorry for your mishap and I hope and pray for a quick and full recovery so that you can continue doing the Lord’s work at full capacity, He knows how badly you and men like you need to be in the fight. For this is not a battle against flesh...

God Bless you and your family.

Sounds great - now you only have to be worried about the battery catching fire. . .

;-)

O Christ Jesus
When all is darkness
And we feel our weakness and helplessness,
Give us the sense of Your Presence,
Your Love and Your Strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
In Your protecting love
And strengthening power,
So that nothing may frighten or worry us,
For, living close to You,
We shall see Your Hand,
Your Purpose, Your Will through all things.

St. Ignatius of Loyola

Best wishes, friend.

Can’t recall if I answered your ladder question.
Yes, still have all the warning labels and I made sure the ladder was deployed correctly and stable.

It was all me.

I have a walking staff similar to one at Brazos. It’s great. I also have two walking poles (like ski poles) from LLBean, made by Komperdel, an Austrian company. I wrecked my knee skiing when I was 19 and reinjured it in 1999 and again in 2009.
It’s difficult to come back from injury, I know, but the human body is amazingly resilient and adaptive, as is the human brain. Most of the time I just feel very blessed.

Just a note: my son sent to me a peg-leg pirate soft toy. I laughed hard over this gift. I think it is hilarious. . .mama, not so much.

One of my grandsons, a five year old, was looking at my prosthetic...I told him it was a robot leg....

Now, he tells everyone that when he grows up, he wants a robot leg like Papaw.....

Better, healing is apparent if you look close.

Pain is down a little but with surgery late next week, pain will come nack.

Appreciate your concern and prayers.

Nap time now.
