Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said barring dozens of Russians from the games was “part of this unfair competition, because the Americans apparently can no longer beat us in a fair fight. They believe that taking back and preserving uncontested leadership in global sports requires sidelining the competition.”
The assertion came in an interview the minister gave to Rossia-1 news channel, aired on Sunday.

it would be fair IF we would dope our athletes as much as they do theirs. But that is against the rules.

I have to confess that I really couldn’t care less about the Olympics. They are a quaint memento of the past to me. Kinda like old radio programs and circuses.
I do like to view those “Olympic ghost town” youtube videos, though.
Sorry Russia, no matter how hard you try, you can’t make the Olympics important again.

Our athletes are just as dirty generally speaking. The Olympics have become a joke in the last few decades. Of course the camel jockey goat humpers kicked off the festivities in ‘72 in Munich. Jimmy Carter wouldn’t let our athletes compete in Moscow in 1980. Today every Olympics is a farce of politics and graft and incompetence.
The Utah winter Olympics were full of bribery (as were all others before that successfully won).
The Brazil olympics rowed in raw sewage. And swam in filth.
A tranny man won the women’s gold in the 800 meter sprint. Obama got all pouty about the Sochi Olympics not placating the vanity of the butt pirates. In this Olympics we have the sicko tiger lady from the Norks, she who is literally a mass murderer dripping in blood, being feted and admired and loved.
Every city that hosts them is left in economic ruin.
And last but not least, the dirty secret is that half the teams are not even from their own countries. Athletes are bought sold, swapped, and half aren’t from the nation they claim to be. Eritrea has a winter olympic team this year with a single Canadian alpine skier. The list is long and ridiculous.
So yes, Lavrov has a point, but the Olympics are already dead. As usual, killed by politicians who destroy everything they touch.
Of course the Russians will seem to have an unfair advantage compared to the Americans. Americans choose their representatives primarily for diversity, while the Russians concentrate on a degree of competence, selecting those who really are the best of the best.
But then, to keep the advantage, the Russians are not above stoking their athletes up a little....

yeah, except that hack proved they were using steroids. Which anyone with eyeballs already knew anyway.
One of the reasons why USSR did well (doping and all) is because athletes hailed from places as diverse as the likes of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia which boast of their own unique sets of skills and sporting traditions. Not just ethnic Russians.
Chechens and Dagestanis still fall under the umbrella of Russia and they are good at things like weightlifting/wrestling etc...
Diversity in sports is a strength.
