Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Attempts Set Record in Trump’s First Year, But Police Ensure..

A record 245 people tried to jump off San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in 2017, but fewer succeeded, thanks to the city’s men and women in blue.

The number of successful police interventions with potential bridge-jumpers jumped from 184 in 2016 to 245 in 2017, while the number of confirmed suicides fell from 39 to 33 over the same period, according to a bridge authority report cited by The Marin Independent Journal.

Five new police officers were added to the bridge’s security detail in 2017, bringing the number of officers available to thwart suicide attempts to 36.

In May of last year, construction began on a $211 million project to build a suicide deterrent system. According to an April 13, 2017 press release on the bridge’s website:

“In May, contractors will begin installing temporary fencing along the Bridge approaches and around the tower legs. They will create detailed measurements so they can begin manufacturing the stainless steel net. In mid-2018, they will begin installation of the suicide deterrent. Similar deterrent systems have been used in various locations around the world, but never in this scale. The deterrent at the Golden Gate Bridge will span 1.7 miles of roadway on each side. It will be located 20 feet down from the sidewalk and extend 20 feet out, over the water. The suicide barrier will be built over four years, with an expected completion date in 2021.”

“A record 245 people tried to jump off San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in 2017, but fewer succeeded, thanks to the city’s men and women in blue.”

Yet another case of corrupt police acting counter to the best interests of society.

“They will create detailed measurements so they can begin manufacturing the stainless steel net.”

If it’s rigid enough then the jumpers will be strained into the ocean. Should make good chum for fisherman parked below.

for some reason , the bridge between Arizona and Nevada at Hoover Dam doesn’t attract jumpers

Last time I was out there (2006) the security was heavy duty and quite annoying. No jumper would have a chance.

I saw a documentary about this bridge.

They set up cameras and just turned them on.

Every once in awhile you would see a splash.

IIRC, GGB jumpers tend to survive the impact, but end up drowning.

FWIW, "The Revengers' Comedies" has an interesting opening with a couple of intended bridge jumpings, as well as "Wilby Wonderful", although the latter continues with other, constant attempts at suicide while town life goes on, unintentional foiling the protagonist, one way or another.

Nah. It’s a Kali thing to be trendy in all things, and the #MeToo meme is just overflowing with things to do, ideas to try, life to experience, bucket list to punch, etc.

Don’t the police have cats to rescue out of trees, or something important to do, rather than wasting time saving Sin Franciscans?

True, the jumpers could also just be bungee jumpers in practice mode.

“t’s San Fruitcisco and 3/4 of them voted for Clinton. That’s a lot of mentally ill people.”

I drive a cab here and it is amazing how many people want to trash Trump when they get in. Trust me, I never bring up politics or anything else controversial.

They bring it up.

It is truly a Derangement Syndrome. The month or two after the election about 75% of my passengers brought him up, from little jibes to total hysteria.

And I’m just giving them a ride.

I never pretend to be a lib. But I don’t go on and on about the conservative side. I try to reason a little, if there is an actual conversation happening and not just a rant.

They should move the lion cages from the SF Zoo onto the “stainless steel net” below the GG Bridge. This would save thousands of dollars of lion food that it is now costing the city of SF. The City could charge admission to watch the lions being fed.

Yes, that is what they want.

And yet:

“Five new police officers were added to the bridge’s security detail in 2017”

Ah, so perhaps Trump’s policies have led to SF being able to hire more POs who can help stop these people? Is that our take-away here?

Maybe it depends on your reason.

Maybe their officers should have a kiosk before the suicide plank, wherein they can inquire. Only people having serious medical issues will be allowed to proceed.

There you are, matching up with their assisted suicide issue.

>>>IIRC, GGB jumpers tend to survive the impact, but end up drowning<<<

Not the way to go, that’s for sure.

I’ll bet most of them thought it would be a quick and painless way to die. Heck of a time to find out it isn’t.

They should post Signs stating that fact. It would be cheaper than high fences and nets, and it would probably have the same effect on reducing Suicides.
