Mulvaney: Trump Won't 'Weaponize' Potential Shutdown Like Obama Did in 2013

Mulvaney: Trump Won't 'Weaponize' Potential Shutdown Like Obama Did in 2013 By Debra Heine January 19, 2018

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney said Friday morning that if the government shuts down it will look very different from the shutdown of 2013, when former President Obama’s administration did things to "hurt people."

Mulvaney added: “There's no other way to describe it. The Obama administration weaponized the shutdown in 2013.” The budget director was referring to what at the time was referred to as "shutdown theater," when the Obama administration unnecessarily closed popular attractions like national parks.

Mulvaney told reporters at the White House that the Trump administration would not be doing the same. "What [the Obama administration] didn't tell you was they did not encourage agencies to use 'carry forward' funds," he said, explaining that the Obama administration had funds at their disposal to lessen the effect of the shutdown on Americans. "Nor did they encourage agencies to use transfer authority. They could have made the shutdown in 2013 much less impactful," he added.

Mulvaney said he had concluded the Obama administration chose to make the shutdown worse for political purposes.

“We're going to manage the shutdown differently, we're not going to weaponize it," he said. "We’re not going to try and hurt people, especially people who work for the federal government."

So, no “barry-cades” blocking the World War II memorial in Washington, which has no federal workers manning it in the first place.

No orange cones placed on scenic dirt shoulders on a STATE highway in South Dakota blocking people from viewing Mt. Rushmore. I remember the image of a guy posted here on FR tossing those cones down a hillside!

Good post.

Now is a great time to drain the swamp, for real. Void all government union contracts, and abolish the NEA and other useless federal agencies.

White House: Dems Are ‘Obstructionist Losers’ For Forcing Shutdown

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a scathing statement blaming Senate Democrats for forcing a government shutdown early Saturday morning.

“Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown. Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans,” Sanders said in a statement. “We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators.”

Democratic lawmakers forced a shutdown amidst frustration over lack of progress in reaching a deal to protect illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors. White House director of legislative affairs Marc Short however told reporters Friday there were no specific demands of bill text to negotiate over the shutdown saying it was more about “politics, not policy.”

Schumer himself did not appear to demand anything in particular to end the shutdown telling reporters “every American knows the Republican Party controls the White House, the Senate, the House,” adding “it’s their job to keep the government open.”
Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney said the Trump administration would keep some services open like national parks and the TSA. Federal workers, including U.S. troops, firefighters, and border patrol authorities, will however be forced to work without pay.

I agree! The shutdown is a good opportunity to prove that life goes on when the fat cat bureaucrats stay at home.

So why again do we need all these fat cat bureaucrats?

Trump holds all the cards.... Schumer will fold soon and eat crow.
