Probably not the scenario to be in for a hiker, but what if youre on a hike. And, you get this feeling that something is near you, not by another human but by a pack of howling coyotes.
When we hear coyotes howling its usually from a safe distance.
How would you handle a pack of coyotes howling closer to you?
Most of the time when Im on a hike, I carry a pistol and depending on the state that allows me to carry my rifle. (AR)
In this video a hiker is unarmed on a hiking trail with coyotes nearby, how would you react?
Heres the excerpt from Jessica Kirsh Youtube:
This is raw, uncut footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition on my very first solo sunset hike as an Arizona resident. All of the sudden on my way back down a trail on Lookout Mountain ? in Phoenix, I found myself surrounded by howling coyotes in every direction! ?
Now at this point, I had only lived in the desert for a little over a year. So this was my first experience hearing coyotes howl this intensely, where I wasnt in the safety of my fenced in backyard.
Watch me try to be as stealth as possible getting back to my car parked at the trail head! See the full surrounded by coyote video here.
And a handgun won't help with an attacking mountain lion. He'll get you in a nano second. In Northern California about 20 years ago a man's remains were found at a trail head. He had been attacked and partially eaten by a mountain lion. A gun was found nearby. Investigators determined that the man was aware of the lion and had managed to pull his gun out but he didn't get even one bullet off. It probably wouldn't have stopped an attacking cat anyway.
They serenade me every night at our house at the farm.
And they avoid me, smile.
They have wolves in Canada.
They’re all over the place here in NE Ohio. We’re very near the CVNP and I’ve heard exactly that sound, pack howling, sometimes it seems within a couple hundred yards of the house on countless evenings. We make sure to keep our dogs indoors then. Neighbors have shot a couple coyotes, but my loaded 30-30 is so far unused.
Are you out west? Western coyotes are 20 to 35 lbs; Eastern Coyotes are actually wolf-coyote hybrids and run 40 to 60 lbs (here in PA). Having spent time around both variants, western coyotes are harmless, but the eastern variety are much sneakier and aggressive (I have only seen them visually when stalking with dogs and night vision, but they will attack pets and livestock with little fear even right at house at night— hit fast and run off). I could definitely see them attacking humans.
You are correct. I believe the howling commences once they have a kill.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders?
You won’t even know the cougar is there. If you doubt that, you must be the one in a million whose pet cat never comes up behind you without you knowing it.
I’ll always remember that night on the porch, staring into the woods with Old Fashions and cigars, listening to the coyotes yip.
I scared shit out of coyotes all the time on my mountain bike they’re very suspicious and pretty much scared of humans
this article is nonsense
California, Idaho, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Seen em all and can also tell you wolves attacking humans is extremely rare. They are a danger to livestock and pets no question and should be shot on sight but as far as a threat to humans I’d worry about a opposum more. They have a natural fear of humans and that’s why you only have seen them at night. There are far more deer attacks than coyotes when discussing humans.
Or while the sun is going down. You will hear the young pups then too.
I went on an Owl Outing in Southern California several years back. We went into the woods and were stalked by a mountain lion.
The adults thought it was pretty cool, but as we were accompanied by some children we thought it best to return to the main road and look for owls from there.
The cat was making plenty of noise in the underbrush. She was warning us away, not planning for a meal.
I was deep in the desert in the morning taking care or “nature” last summer when a coyote literally walked by less than 10 feet away. He stopped and he and I looked at each other for a few minutes but neither of us made any aggressive moves. Then he just trotted off. Pretty and obviously well fed fellow.. last years rains caused an explosion in the bunny rabbit population...it was rabbit proof fence all over again
Any time I’m out in the Arizona desert I’m armed. I consider it foolish to do otherwise.
“You never see a coyote.”
I see them all the time.
I didn’t see anything, but the camera was moving around way too much. I do recognize the yipping sound though, but I’ve only heard it at night, never during the day.
I think she needs to move back to CA.
Certainly coyotes were omnipresent in the Old West and were accepted as simply part of the geography. I've never heard of cowboys being terrified of them, and not just because they had guns.
Are we going to start being afraid of foxes next?
