The North-Eastern U.S. is experiencing record-breaking cold. Even the very sharks are dying as they swim. Happily the New York Times is here to put it all in context. Its all further evidence of global warming, of course!
All is explained in a story headed Why so cold? Climate Change May Be Part of the Answer
As bitter cold continues to grip much of North America and helps spawn the fierce storm along the East Coast, the question arises: Whats the influence of climate change?
Some scientists studying the connection between climate change and cold spells, which occur when cold Arctic air dips south, say that they may be related. But the importance of the relationship is not fully clear yet.
The Arctic is not as cold as it used to be the region is warming faster than any other and studies suggest that this warming is weakening the jet stream, which ordinarily acts like a giant lasso, corralling cold air around the pole.

It is hard to read the whole article. That “click bait” site takes forever to load.
Well here in SE Louisiana we have been experiencing lows in the low 20’s for four days now. The day does heat up to about 40 in the day. But for me at least that is still too darn cold. 8>)

A simple Google search will turn up lots of cold waves and hot waves in the USA long before “THE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT” morphed into “GLO-BULL WARMING”, which then became “CLIMATE CHANGE!”
Somewhere in that mess, around 1975, was “THE COMING ICE AGE” scare. We were supposed to be under a mile of ice by now.
Let me get this straight.
Global warming, Global warming, Global warming......, but wait! The climate isn’t warming it’s cooling.
Climate change, Climate change, Climate change, but the climate is COOLING!
Climate change (global warming) might be causing the cooling. We don’t know how, but it’s all we’ve got for now. Keep sending our “scientists” (libtards) your millions for “study” and we’ll get back to you.
Whether the climate is warming or cooling, there is NOTHING puny humans can do about it.
The earth consists of 3/4 water and also vast tracts of uninhabited land. To consider that the puny activities of man made industrial effects to cause huge shifts in global climate change is liberal hubris. Solar, cyclical wind patterns along with the dynamics of a rotating earth are far greater and powerful forces not subject to puny mankind.
Like you I would chuckle regarding the absurdity of the notion that man is destroying the earth, as pointed out in the article, of the dire consequences of those in positions of power advocating it being a reality and the fools that blindly follow.
I’ll be 8 miles out on Saginaw bay Saturday. Close to a foot of Ice. It was open water two weeks ago.
Gotta stock up the freezer with some Walleye and Perch.
Where the earth's surface is moving at a different speed than the air above it There will be shear force in the air where the surface trees, hills, bumps, etc. attempt to pull the air along with it. This shear will get less and less as altitude increases. So the surface tends to pull the air along with it, but the effect isn't instantaneous.
Let's say you're living at a latitude where the earth surface rotational speed is 800 mph, east to west, but the air at high altitude above it has a 1000 mph east to west speed. The air above you will appear to have a 200 mph west to east speed. It's a 200 mph west to east "jet stream".
As I said in the last paragraph, this is a simplistic explanation, but it is the actual reason the jet stream generally flows west to east.
Without carbon dioxide mean global temperature would be something like 18 F. Thank God for CO2.
“Greenhouse effect” is a misleading term. Greenhouses act by reducing convective cooling. “Greenhouse” gases convert normal IR radiation emitted by the surface of the earth to heat, and thereby shift the equilibrium temperature of the troposphere higher. Most of the absorption takes place in the upper troposphere. With or without additional “anthropogenic” CO2 effectively all of the IR emitted by the surface will be absorbed. More CO2 means it is absorbed closer to the surface.
The important questions are how much of a shift in the surface equilibrium temperature will occur, and what the consequences are.
A first order answer to the first question is simple physics, and it indicates that a doubling of CO2 will result in approximately 0.5 degree F of surface warming. In order to get a bigger number, +1 C, +5 C, +yourguessisasgoodasanybodies, alarmists posit amplification through positive feedback mechanisms. These feedbacks have not been observed and some (Roy Spence) believe that the evidence indicates that the feedbacks are slightly negative, reducing the first order effects. YMMV.
The answer to the second question, “what are the consequences?” is not easy to answer. There are likely to be winners and losers, but on net, a warmer world is probably a happier world. IOW, the current mean world temperatures are sub-optimal.
An often overlooked side benefit of enriched CO2 is more and better plant growth. The earth is becoming more verdant.
This is correct, I’ve spent some time hunting Alaska, British Columbia, etc. About 95% of Alaska is exactly as it was in the 1750’s, inaccessible except on foot or by plane. They have no idea about what’s going on there, it’s vast and empty, of people at least.
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
Cool...but what about the IR coming from the sun and stars? Wouldn’t an excess of CO2 prevent what you are explaining by increasing absorption in the mid/thermal IR bands which I know absorb less energy than the rest of the spectrum?
As always, I blame Canada.
When I want to cook a dish, I pop it in the freezer for about an hour. It always emerges at 350 degrees.

Uh uh, you are stuck with global warming not climate change.
Gen: 8:21-partial I will never again curse the ground for mans sake, although the imagination of mans heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.
“I appreciate that the air motion is not quite as simple as this.”
No it isn’t thats why you have to master ohysics and advaced math for a degree in meteorolgy something that the global warming whores have noy an iota of a clue.
The atmosphere blocks most radiation coming from space, except in the visible spectrum. The surface of the earth reflects some of the light back into space, which is why the earth is visible to a camera in space. Some of the visible radiation is absorbed by the objects on the surface of the earth. Black absorbs strongly, snow not so much. Regardless, the surface of the earth converts the absorbed sunlight to heat. The surface then glows at infrared, depending on its temperature. This glow radiates away the heat. Air is warmed by contact with the surface, via convection.
The infrared glow of the sunlight-warmed earth is only partially absorbed by the CO2 in the atmosphere - only certain wavelengths. Just as absorbing sunlight warms the surface, so absorbing IR “heats” the CO2. The CO2 will re-reradiate the IR, unless it interacts with (”collides”) with another molecule first. The heating is dependent on the mean time between collision with another molecule being short compared to the mean time before it reradiates. Effectively all the IR that is in the bands that CO2 absorbs is converted to heat. The denser the CO2 the closer to surface the conversion occurs.
