Rey, on the other hand, never encounters failure. In The Last Jedi, instead of being instructed by a wise sage, Luke, in the tradition of the mythic hero, it is she who teaches him. Luke is thus deprived of the opportunity to pass from the warrior-hero into the mentor-teacher. At the end he is still impetuous, still myopic, still being lectured by Yoda. But Reyshes perfect. As Yoda tells Luke as the last Jedi archive burns, there is nothing in those books that the girl does not already possess. In other words, she does not need the lessons of the past or a mentor to guide her. She already knows because shes empowered. You go, girl! But beyond her inauthenticity as a masculine hero, Reys perfection and her cross-dressing deprive the film of another crucial element: a romance.
There are no princesses to rescue in the new Star Wars. There is no need for the traditional heroic story of the triumph of good over evil ending in love and children. It is in romance that the masculine and feminine hero journeys unify, resulting in new life. By making Rey a female character in a male role, the movie reveals its own contempt for life-giving femininity and its symbiotic relationship to strong masculinity.

the real crime committed by the new movies... is that they have made every thing and every one from the original movies meaningless.
Every sacrifice and action made previously was in vane.
Every beloved character lived ... miserably ever after.
Yes, they have now completely broken with the past and can now do whatever they want... but they didn’t need to make everything and every one from the past irrelevant in the process.
Interesting analysis
The Phantom Menace ruined "The Last Jedi".
The Jedi went from noble warriors for truth and justice to a creepy bunch who takes very little children away from their families and forces them to live without emotional ties while indoctrinating them into a weird philosophy that allows no absolutes. Which is in it's self is an absolute.
They really resembled a group of Mamelukes more then anything else.
No doubt, controlling minds is a very serious job.
I don’t watch movies ever only my wife and children do
The last movie I watched which the wife got on Netflix which took me about two months to watch was called Captain fantastic and it was excellent my whole family said I was that guy
Otherwise Holly weird is a bunch of pedophile losers and I wouldn’t watch any of their crap if you paid me
The Laura Dern character was a feminist mess right down to the frumpy dress, horrible childish hair color, and she was a total bore. She was just so “smart” like the Hilary foreign policy. The lesson of the movie was teach men to run away rather than fight.
I saw the movie. Politics aside, it wasn’t very good. I did not tell my son what I honestly thought about it. He liked it and was happy.
But the Good Vs. Evil aspect was blurred bad. The Evil was obviously evil. The good guys were a conflicted mess from Luke to Ray to Fin. All the good guys were routinely confused about their loyalties (except Poe). The movie almost tried to emphasize that there wasn’t much difference between the good guys and bad guys and that conflict was pointless. Just live under tyranny and move on. Luke Skywalker has become a sniveling sissy.
Some of the dialogue and writing was pretty weak too. On that point, I got the impression that this effort was a transitional set up for movies to come. But, like the article says, I’m not sure who the hero or main character will be in the next film. Chewbacca?
She entered the “No girls allowed” clubhouse from The Lil Rascals.
His attempts to bromance Spiderpiglet and out grim Eeyorverine can only carry things so far.
Spoilers ahead, so don’t read if you don’t want to know.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but the Yoda quote is wrong. He doesn’t tell Luke that there’s nothing in “those books that the girl does not already possess”; he tells Luke there’s nothing in the “Jedi Tree” where the books were stored that Rey doesn’t already possess, and then goes on to destroy the tree. It is later revealed that Rey has already removed the old Jedi texts from the tree, so she (presumably) will be using them on her journey to reinvent the Jedi.
My take: It sucked.
100% agree. But they kept Leia on as the hero even though she can barely talk or move. Come on all you guys giving the movie a pass, it was practically a NOW fundraising commercial.
EXACTLY. See my post in #27. I had the same thought. The evil guys were pretty obviously evil. But the good guys were a conflicted mess.
Yes, I believe it was the He-man Women Hater's Club.
I agree. It seemed like some kid got his hands on a high-end editor and played Mr. Potato Head with the original trilogy.
Rey is a female Wesley Crusher.
Fromthere:
“Indeed, there is speculation amongst fans and academics, mainly pejorative, that Wesley was a self-insertion character for Gene Roddenberry, Roddenberry’s middle name being Wesley.[21][22]”
Regards,
At least we still have Star Trek Discovery aka STD
Oh wait...
