.22 LR on Shelves 3.6 Cents per Round
Gun Watch ^ | 26 December, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

The .22 LR bubble is over. With the Trump Presidency, gun owners are no longer worried that ammunition might be hard to find in the indefinite future.

I visited the WalMart in Northern Dallas on the corner of Marsh Lane  and Frankford Rd. It has had more ammunition available, at lower prices, than the others I have visited in Arizona and Texas.

As seen in the photo, take on December 20, 2017, Federal bulk packs of 550 rounds of 36 grain high velocity .22 Long Rifle cartridges were priced at $19.94.  According to my calculator 1994/550 is 3.62 cents a cartridge. That is the lowest price I have seen in a store, on the shelf, since the end of 2012, when the great .22 ammunition bubble was inflated by the Sandy Hook mass murder and President Obama's attempt to use the tragedy to enact strong restrictions on gun ownership in the United States.

That attempt ultimately failed. But for long years, with tens of millions of gun owners determined to stockpile a few hundred or a few thousand rounds of .22 ammunition, shelves were bare and middlemen made large profits as the price of .22 ammunition doubled, redoubled, and redoubled again.

At the height of the bubble, 500 rounds of .22 LR ammo went as high as $100, or more. That is 20 cents a round! Just before the bubble I purchased bulk Federal .22 LR on sale at 2.6 cents a round.

I predicted, that with the election of Donald Trump, .22 LR prices would go below 4 cents a round by October of 2017. Many scoffed at the idea, saying that manufacturers would conspire and never allow prices to fall that low.  On line sources showed multiple sources for .22 LR below 4 cents a round in October.

The question is how low will .22 ammunition prices fall? Stockpiles of .22 ammuntion have been purchased by tens of millions of gun owners. Millions of new gun owners have been created. My hunch is that most gun owners will not want to shoot up their stockpile, but keep it "just in case".

On the other hand, at a recent gun show in Yuma, Arizona, I saw 10,000 rounds of .22 ammunition for sale for $420, or 4.2 cents a round.  The price was reduced from 6 cents a round, after I told the sellers that WalMart had plenty on the shelf, locally at 4.2 cents.

.22 LR production has been increased by about 20% in the industry.

There are bound to be ups and downs in the market. Metal prices and energy prices are considerably lower than they were in 2008.

Here is a new prediction: Before the end of the Trump Presidency, we will see .22 LR on sale for 2.5 cents a round or less. It may not be common, but it will happen.

Report it here when it happens, so we can all say the "good old days" are back.

Local Ranch supply has .22 LR for about 3 cents per round, but it is LEAD bullets—no copper jacket—and is made in MEXICO.

Leaves the barrel too dirty. I need .22 LR—copper jacketed—Hollow Point. Found it available at Wal Mart for 5.2 cents per round.

There is no copper jacketed .22 rimfire, although I did see Aguilla prototypes some years ago at the Shot Show. The “copper” is plated onto lead HV rimfires. 17s and .22 magnums are jacketed.

I’d love to see 9mm and 5.56mm to make similar drops.

I have a steel target that is rated for .22. I shot it with my .17 hmr and it punched hole right through the 1/4” thick steel.

That is likely the Aguilla brand, probably their Standard Velocity. I have heard good reviews lately. Is it reliable? that is the most important thing.

Three cents a round is an interesting figure.

Do you know where you saw it at that price? I have seen it on line as low as 3.6 cents a round.

You haven’t lived unless you’ve hunted ground squirrels with .17HMR. Almost as much fun as bouncing bunnies at 100 yards. ;-)

Can’t you just buy out of state?

You sadly underestimate, best price I found was on Black Friday at Big 5 and it was $25 for a 525 round box of federal, that's 4.8 cents and it's only gonna go up here in taxifornia.

Everyone with a relative or will to travel will be going outside of California for ammo, the only ones not affected will be the criminals, but that's who the dems represent.

Glad I bought 50,000 rounds years ago before the shortage.

Can’t go over the border and bring it back. Can buy online, but it must be shipped to an ammo dealer, not to your home.

Our 2A in CA is whatever they want it to be.

Buy all you can, ship it close to the Cali line and sell, sell, SELL to the Californians sneaking across the border to buy ammo after their chintzy law goes into effect.

Hmm, I wonder what FedEx's policy is regarding "will call" pickup at storefront locations? If they'll let anyone pick up, regardless of delivery location vs. addressee's state of residence, then this ban won't work at all.

Around 1960, my best friend and I roamed the woods etc. with .22 rifles. I am not sure how he afforded it as his family was not wealthy but Royce had a Marlin model 39.

The best I could do was a Remington model 514 single shot. Sometimes I would borrow my Brother’s model 513 which was a really fine rifle, extremely accurate.

Shorts, Longs, and LR were 55 cents, 65 and 75 respectively. I think they stayed that same price most of my pre-teen and teen years. That was probably higher adjusted for inflation than they are now. We could not afford to shoot a lot.

Now Royce had a good thing going. If he killed a young good looking coon, he would take it to a Black guy who would always give him 75 cents for one. That was higher than chicken so it was a good deal. He would then buy a box of LR.

You mean its ILLEGAL to bring legally purchased ammo into California??

Isn’t there something in the Constitution about states not being able to regulate free trade between the states?

Yes, it will be illegal, though an out of state seller can ship it to a CA approved ammo vendor for you to pick up.
Yes, this flies in the face of the constitution.
