Only 15% of hiring managers would consider hiring an overweight woman

Radio personality Shavonne Patrice Owens, 37, says she experienced weight discrimination firsthand when she applied for a daycare job in Huntsville, Alabama, two years ago. Despite having all the qualifications for the job, Owens says her friend — a former employee of the daycare center in question (whose employment later terminated) — told her the reason she was ultimately passed over for the job was because of her weight.

Owens, who was 525 pounds at 5’11” at the time of her interview with the daycare center, said that this incident “hurt for a second, just for a second… but I know who I am and because of my weight, it has restricted me from a lot of things.” Looking back, she said she’s lost out on other career opportunities (such as jobs in retail that would have required prolonged periods of standing), and she suspects her size was working against her.

What’s more,“the standards for physical appearance are stricter for women than men. Women are more likely to be evaluated on their physical appearance,” says Dr. Kelly Brownell, the dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. This, he explains, makes it even harder for overweight or obese women to contend with recruiters’ prejudicial biases against them.

Probably so-typical Latina, I’m far from perfect-I’m proud of my skills and my ability to make my own way and be self sufficient-my parents brought me up that way. I’ll never hesitate to be there for a loved one or friend and have their back the way I know they have mine, either. Everyone is entitled to make their own choices and not live in the nanny state liberal love so much.

Lol. I would love to give you the details on the other two types but it would be wildly politically incorrect. But since you mentioned Muslims, one of the other types are overt religious persons who might come to a job interview with overt religious jewelry or symbols, mentioning prayers “I have been praying for a job”, “I will pray I get this job” “Since I have been born again, God is in control of my life” I will not work religious holidays. etc. The logic behind this is that those who are willing to discuss their religion openly in a business setting are also willing to use their religion to justify their actions and attitude in a professional setting. Many also believe because of their religion they are superior and do not have to answer to anyone but their deity. THE THIRD TYPE IS COMPLETELY OFF LIMITS.

when we interview someone, it is our policy to graciously walk the candidate to their car. Always illuminating to see the condition of the back seat. Old beater car - is okay; but a car full of trash in the back - not so much

It is a perfectly rational approach to screen out candidates for these issues.


Years ago when I attended the University of Washington they had weight restrictions on new students. It was the belief at the time that taxpayers should not bear the freight of educating a very heavy young person who would likely not be employable.

Apparently it was not common knowledge. I would not have even known about it if I had not heard it from a fellow high school student who had to lose 80 pounds the summer before he could be admitted. He was a brilliant student, about six feet tall who maybe weighed 280 before losing weight.

Of course that assuredly is not the case now with all the fat high school students. I’m sure it would be considered discrimination to have young people slim down before throwing money at them.

You got me! Trekkies and that is because they can go to the bathroom at work and leave work through time travel. Lol. My friends used this profile study at least ten years ago and actually so much has changed socially. As an example, you mentioned ”homos” which is not the third profile group, however, I bet if the study is available today, it would be.

I have worked with a few gay people. I suppose they were relatively good workers, thinking back. However, one guy was super moody and really had an attitude issue. From the info I read in the study, I am betting if they would have been a profiled group, they would be “do not hire”. This study was not necessarily to find good workers, it was how to avoid conflict, law suits, compatibility between other employees, maximum work effort, and the least amount of lost work time, etc. A complete road map on hiring practices. As a matter of fact, an employer could record an interview and submit it to this profile group and they would analyze the voice characteristics as well as potential problems by how the interviewee answered. Our friends had long term, dedicated, happy employees.........almost like a nirvana environment. Lol......until......the husband got it on with one of the white, agnostic, skinny female employees.

Yea, them skinny white chicks will get ya every time.

I worked with lots of the gays. The lesbos were so busy trying to prove they were men, that they did a pretty good job. Most of the male catamites were excellent employees, as far as showing up to work and doing the best they could. They also got along pretty good with everybody.

Except this one guy. He was a fat, militant, older homo dude with a handlebar mustooch who liked to dress up in leather and bring pictures of himself and his "boyfriend" to work and show people. He had been in the Navy and had a huge mermaid tattoo on his back.

He also liked to make out (in uniform) outside the building in public with his fella. It was like he was daring somebody to say something. Of course, nobody had the balls to do anything about him. He had lawsuit written all over him. People said he farted (soundlessly of course) constantly and it smelled like Liberace died in his ass fourteen years ago. I heard he got the HIV and left the job.

The other gay homos were funny, smart, and excellent gossips. I used them to gather intelligence on my other employees. Very good spies, the fags.

Now, black chicks. Don't get me started. It was like working with Angela Davis and Moochelle Osucka on their periods.

The Mexicans were hit and miss, just like normal people. Some excellent and some sucked ass. Same with the Asians a(Hmongs) and black males.

So, according to my research. It's the black chicks. A higher percentage of them were jacked up than any other demographic.

Go ahead. Just say it.
