LaVar Ball, patriarch of the famed basketball family, has denied that President Donald Trump helped his son, UCLA freshman basketballer LiAngelo Ball, get out of potential shoplifting charges in China.
Speaking to ESPN, LaVar Ball said everyone wanted to make it seem like Trump helped the family, and noted that people try to make a big deal out of nothing.
Balls basketball family has a reality show, Ball in the Family, that airs on Facebook, and his brash style is regularly parodied by Kenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live. The family includes Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball; UCLA frosh LiAngelo; and high school basketball sensation LaMelo Ball, who is already committed to UCLA.
UCLA basketball team members LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hall were caught shoplifting during UCLAs trip to China to play a game against Georgia Tech. They were confined to the team hotel while authorities investigated the incident and pondered formal charges. All three players returned to the States this week and are indefinitely suspended by the program.
At a press conference following their return, they thanked Trump for his part in freeing them after the President asked them for kudos via his Twitter account.
But LaVar Ball isnt buying Trumps intervention with China President Xi Jinping.
Who? Ball said to ESPN. What was (Trump) over there for? Dont tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.
Trump boasted via Twitter that the players were facing 10 years in prison before he spoke with Xi Jinping. LaVar Ball previously downplayed the charges, saying it aint that big of a deal.
As long as my boys back here, Im fine, Ball told ESPN. Im happy with how things were handled. A lot of people like to say a lot of things that they thought happened over there. Like I told him, They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes. Im from L.A. Ive seen a lot worse things happen than a guy taking some glasses. My son has built up enough character that one bad decision doesnt define him. Now if you can go back and say when he was 12 years old he was shoplifting and stealing cars and going wild, then thats a different thing.
Everybody gets stuck on the negativity of some things and they get stuck on them too long. Thats not me. I handle whats going on and then we go from there.
ESPN reported that there was surveillance footage of Ball, Hill and Riley shoplifting from three stores inside a retail center near the team hotel in Hangzhou, China. Sources previously told ESPN that the situation was likely to be resolved in several weeks, but Trump was visiting China and claimed to have brought the matter up with Xi Jinping. Days later, the players were freed.
I don’t really care about a reply.
My purpose was to inform.

“.@realDonaldTrump It would be extremely appreciated if time was spent making positive changes for our future and that of Wildlife, rather than complaining about a college basketball players dad.”

Good point. He has $500 shoes to sell
Me neither but the rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Ha! Good to know. Lets see how fast they close down.
He was never the same after that beating they gave him in Roots ...
LaVar Ball, whoever he is, is a racist.

Hmm... the last one has possibilities but the rest?
Thing is, he never spent a minute in jail. All they got was confinement to their hotel. The kid was bragging it wasn't a big deal to hang out at the hotel. Hey, a spa, pool, gym, room service. What's not to enjoy? They're just lucky, after stealing from at least 3 stores, Trump (Trump? Who'dat?) happened to be there at the same time or they would be spending the next 10 years in a Chinese prison. They'll continue to mess up until one day nobody will be able to save their butts.
That one bad decision was repeated at least two more times that day. Highly probable not the first or last time.
The coach went through their bags and found other items. Apparently, there is video of them stealing from three stores. Who knows how many other stores. I’d like to know what else the coach found.

What a family of feral losers.
How many times do you need to have to see the crime statistics? How many times do you need to see the ratio of Black to white crime rates? How often do you need to see that ~12.5% of the US population consistently commits ~80% of the violent crime, consumes 36.9% of the Welfare costs, hunts down white perils in packs, and then claims victim status? This same group falls at the bottom of the class in every educational bracket, without regard to income bracket. And as we lower the standards, this group lowers their performance.
I wish I could day that this was a phenomenon isolated to the USA, but it is not. This ratio is duplicated all over the world.
Yet, you want to provoke me? I am not the one with my head stuck up a dark and unsanitary oriface; denying the facts that are present to any and all that will bother to look. I am truly sorry that Blacks chose to live this way. But this is a choice that they chose to make. Please show me any community that has grown to prosperity because of their Black population. Please point out a single Black Country that can even feed itself.
I offer Baltimore, Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and Los Angeles as examples. These USED to be prosperous, growing and affluent cities that one would desire to live in.
Now, can you dispute my point; without attacking me?
Let’s get down to deductive logic. If the causative agent of ungratefulness were melanin, then necessarily all black people would be ungrateful.
I’m sure you would hide this very weak theory of yours if you were speaking in person to Ben Carson or Allen West.
You are a role model, for your criminal son, LaVar!! Stupid moron...
I’m was beginning to think that I was the only one who had no clue who they are. Glad I’m not the only one. Of course, I’ve never watched an NBA game in my life (BORING) nor do I ever plan to watch.
I wouldn’t exactly call this family “famous”.
