WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK, NY A collective scream Wednesday marked a year since Donald Trump was elected leader of the U.S.
Hundreds of New Yorkers gathered for the anniversary, crowding into Washington Square Park Wednesday night and howling at the top of their lungs.
The cathartic group wail was the only release that would satisfy some New Yorkers after the year that's passed since Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. New Yorkers overwhelmingly supported Clinton during the 2016 presidential elections with all boroughs except Staten Island casting most of their votes for her 79 percent of ballots.
The crowds started to gather in the park shortly before 7 p.m.
"Yell about everything that's enraged you not just since Trump's election, but the months leading up to it; everything that we've seethed about, but had no control over," the event's organizer, Nathan Wahl, wrote on a Facebook page inviting people to the event.
"Yell about Trump and his sexual assault, his arrogance, his racism, his bigotry, his intolerance of anyone with a different nationality or skin color or gender than his own. Yell about his calls to silence reporters, to quell the first amendment, his compassion for white supremacists, his encouragement of police brutality and violence."
John Eng, a Manhattan resident, came out with a "Dump Trump" sign on Wednesday night.
"I'm here to protest everything our president stands for. I believe the whole year has been a nightmare," Eng said. Eng cited Trump's actions on immigration and his statements about white supremacists among the most frustrating periods of Trump's presidency.
Eng, 54, said he couldn't pick just one moment from the past year that had most made him want to scream.
"When you wake up one day, you believe it can't get any worse, you can't get any more angry," Eng said. "Then something happens the next day."
The anti-Trump protesters were met by an unexpected group of Trump supporters on Wednesday night. A group of at least a dozen people, many dressed in "Make America Great Again" gear from the Trump campaign, showed up to heckle the protestors. The protestors and anti-protestors frequently got into heated arguments before and after the central scream, with one fight nearly devolving to blows after an anti-protestor stole a sign from a Trump protestor.
Eva Sahana, an organizer with the group Refuse Fascism, said she wasn't in Washington Square Park to scream helplessly.
"We are screaming in rage, we are screaming in pain, but we are screaming in unity and solidarity cause we have a plan and a way forward," Sahana said.
Sahana said she was "a little surprised" by the Trump supporters who had turned out, but not deterred by them.
"It's extremely, extremely frustrating," she said. "Luckily, those are not the people we're trying to speak to. We're speaking to the tens of millions of people who we know hate the Trump and Pence regime and these people have already crossed the line."
Just remember, such are the types of people who helped elect two new Democrat governors in New Jersey and Virginia.
Don’t you with they didn’t vote?
And that is to scream some more next Nov. 8.
"...Ooooohhh, videos anyone?..."
Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about! If I smiled any harder I might hurt something. :)
Your frigging arrogance that living in an anthill gives you the right to instruct the rest of us how to live and think.
The primitives were on a roll, huh? Sure wish I could have seen it.
I know the exact episode you’re talking about. Someone bought me a DVD collection a few years ago with some Andy Griffith episodes on it. That’s one of them. It’s a good one.
Hillary’s so vain she probably only screamed out her own name during sex.
Folks like that are a danger to themselves.
“Folks like that are a danger to themselves.”
I’d be just fine with that - but often they endanger us... and they vote.
It’s too bad that “He Will Not Divide Us” project failed. That allowed the unhinged the opportunity to vent on camera 24/7 and not let the rage get all backed up.
You will have a long (and hopefully restful) sleep, my FRiend. ;-)
I watched an ever-changing graph like that on election night.
It’s a miracle I did not have a stroke.
Great show. Went really downhill when Don Knotts had to fulfill his movie contract, but even at its worst, it was still better than many shows that came after.
