A Cambridge Public Schools librarian has explained why her class won't be keeping a donation of books donated by First Lady Melania Trump.
In an open letter on the book review site, Horn Book, elementary school librarian Liz Phipps Soeiro explained that her school already has thousands of books and postured that there were schools in greater need of the donation. She also took the opportunity to criticize the policies of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
Soeiro criticized the choice of donated books as well.
"So, my school doesn’t have a NEED for these books. And then there’s the matter of the books themselves. You may not be aware of this, but Dr. Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature," she wrote.
Soeiro continued, writing that schools in large cities are in greater need than hers in Cambrige.
"School libraries around the country are being shuttered. Cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit are suffering through expansion, privatization, and school “choice” with no interest in outcomes of children, their families, their teachers, and their schools. Are those kids any less deserving of books simply because of circumstances beyond their control? Why not go out of your way to gift books to underfunded and underprivileged communities that continue to be marginalized and maligned by policies put in place by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos? Why not reflect on those “high standards of excellence” beyond only what the numbers suggest? Secretary DeVos would do well to scaffold and lift schools instead of punishing them with closures and slashed budgets."

There are many other things they could have done except openly reject her generosity.
If they really didn’t “need” the books, hand out the books for free to children, donate them to a women’s shelter or another school.

I bet the books Our Melania donated were personally selected by her, and would have included, in addition to the Seuss books, solid, high quality reading material.

Maybe so, but still, 60 years later, I remember the fun that it was to learn to read these books. And they had enough of an impact on me that, again 60 years on, I can still pretty much recite the whole of "One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish" ...

That is a great idea. Although I fear that the MSM would spin it in a bad way, like the First Lady brought unnecessary things to a storm-ravaged population.
But I bet the children and their parents would appreciate it. They must have lost so many belongings, and the books could take their minds off of the problem for an hour or so.
When I was a teenager, I was fat and had no friends (obviously no comparison to having your home devastated), and my favorite thing was to lose myself in a book. Reading can help a person escape for a while. :)
HOWEVER.....Phipps Soeiro “was NOT authorized to accept or reject donated books on behalf of the school or school district”.... and ‘counseled her on a policy against using public resources for political purposes’......

“Liz gives kids [and families] the opportunity to find their civic voice and use it to fight for what is right”....Students learn about research, communication, and advocacy and have lobbied local leaders.

... "I can think of no better gift for children than books; it was a wonderful gesture, if one that could have been better thought out.....
In return, I’m attaching a list of ten books that I hope will offer you a window into the lives of the many children affected by the policies of your husband’s administration.....Please make time to learn about and value them.

Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes..... the Need for Diverse Books, further explores and shines a spotlight on the systemic racism and oppression in education and literature.

First Ladies Letter to the students...
I found it very disturbing insulting the First Lady this way.....not to mention the letter and gifts were written to the children..not her..who BTW has no authority to reject or accept them according to the school. I read her letter carefully and she most assuredly cloaked insults not only for Melania’s selections, but for Trumps polices...none of which should come into play when receiving a gift for children.
I a hopeful that this won’t slide...I don’t think you want to insult Melania Trump...though she has very broad shoulders this gal did so regarding children, and Melania’s sensitive and close to kids.
I’ve worked in school libraries before. Kids are hard on books.
The librarian could have graciously accepted the gift of the First Lady of the United States to replace old, worn out editions.
School Libraries do it all the time.
She has learned Alinski craft well....or she had help parsing that piece of crap out there! I do hope Melania responds in "like fashion".....that goes over the top of this leftists limited ability to grasp.
Salvation....she wasn’t looking for anything but to respond politically since it was the First Lady. Her letter makes that very clear. And she’s a leftist political ‘activist’.
But to have the utter audacity to even imagine she had the authority to ‘reject a gift TO THE CHILDREN’ from THE FIRST LADY is astounding.....what utter arrogance!
BTW...She’s been at her job too long as everything is “mine” she speaks of. It’s not... she works “for” the University.
