For us in Russia, communism is a dead dog. For many people in the West, it is still a living lion. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
In 1950 Congress passed the Internal Security Act and, four years later, the Communist Control Act. It condemned communism and the Communist Party of the United States. Today a sizeable portion of Congress actually belongs to the Communist Party U.S.A. or is sympathetic to it. In a recent poll, 40 percent of Americans prefer communism to capitalism.
Sadly, the people most in need of grasping the irony are immune to its comprehension.
I’m familiar with Mencken but never read that one until last week. When I saw the date, it almost floored me.
Fer shuuuure!
What is going on now is much closer to the Red Army Faction and Khmer Rouge than anything from the old Soviet Union.
Communism, socialism, egalitarianism whatever label one wants to pin on it will most certainly never die. I’m convinced it has some genetic components. As does conservatism.
There is no substantive difference between the various branch “isms” that derive from the poisoned Marxist tree. The difference is only one of degree of brutality and state control. So communism, fascism, and socialism are really different shadings of totalitarian state oppression.
We are now seeing Khrushchev’s prediction that they “would bury us” come to fruition.
The KGB sowed the seeds back in the 50’s that have blossomed into the Ministry of Propaganda and the Ministry of Education that control the minds of the weak.
Whom did they survey, Ivy League sophomores? I really doubt the number is that high. And if it is, I totally doubt that the respondents actually understand what communism is. In the words of the immortal Ronaldus Magnus:
A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx. Ronald Reagan
I have pondered many forms of governance and always came back to Americanism because of a single distinction.
Which of the many isms do you prefer?
Isms range from 0.0% government control to 100% government control.
Isms have many labels, sub-labels, and acronyms.
Isms may be constituted or not.
Isms may have organic documentation or not.
I long ago grew weary of sorting through all the variations of each and settled it with one question.
Regardless of the name, regardless of who favors it, and regardless of what it can do for me if the first obligation of that government is not to protect peoples rights then I want nothing to do with it.
Well said, and I agree with you.
