I don’t want to see protests. I don’t want to see dances in the end zone. I don’t want to see ‘look at me hair’ hanging out of helmets. I just want to see football.

So the NFL is a pet rock or a hula hoop that lasted longer than comparable nonsense products? I’ll buy that. If these multi-millionaires are both oppressed and so disengaged that even during the game they can focus on their hatred for those who pay the bills, the NFL is as useless as a box with a “pet rock” in it.

I’m surprised no one has brought up the brain injury issue. If I had watched football, that would stop me in my tracks. Being entertained by people who are literally destroying their brain to entertain me? Not my cup of tea.

Several reasons for the drop are being mentioned here, but all those reasons except one were present well before the 2016 season. There had been several years of steady audience growth until 2016, and then K’nick and others provided fans with the new reason to not watch. And the 8% overall drop in the TV audience followed.

Tebow was not an NFL caliber starting QB. And I like the guy for what he believes and stands for.

He’s having fun in minor league baseball in a town that likes him. I like minor league baseball-/kind of a cross between high-school and pro.

And all the guys out there on the sidelines these days are, to your definition, “NFL caliber”?

Josh McCown, 5-22 as a starter going into this season?

DeShone Kizer, who gets migraines in the middle of a game?

Jared Goff, 0-7 as a starter going into this season.

I’ll admit that Tebow is no Trevone Boykin

I think all reasons so far presented are valid. A few more just from my perspective.

1) I’m from Houston. I expect total averageness or frustrating, unnecessary defeat from my pro sports teams. It’s a Houston tradition. After not having a decent quarterback, uh, like ever, I just know they Texans aren’t going anywhere. They certainly cannot beat the Patriots, so eh, whatever, stopped caring.

2) Sundays are busy for people, myself included. You come home from your job 5 days a week and are probably mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. And there are daily chores to do. Saturdays and Sundays may be your only days to do anything fun or interesting or productive.

3) The NFL is basically one big debate on a million rules where occasionally a football game breaks out. Constantly changing and adding and tweaking rules every season. And instant replays just prolong the time between action on the field. Not that I disagree with instant replay, but the announcers spend most of their time talking about rules and interpretations of what happened and it just drags on and on until you just don’t care.

4) Run, run, throw, punt. That’s it. There’s nothing interesting except whether one godlike physical specimen can outmuscle another if he’s told to go to right place by his coach and QB on a play. College ball has all sorts of cool plays, but the NFL is just as straightforward as it can be.

NFL playoffs are pretty spectacular displays, but the regular season isn’t even worth DVRing for me. I can just checks and highlights later.

Boxing was really popular until a couple of folks got beaten to death on live TV. And it still makes money on PPV. So it appears your concerns about TBI are not widely shared.

The last straw was the ridiculous fight between Larry Holmes and Randall Tex Cobb, after which Howard Cosell vowed to never announce another boxing match again.

Your post was about NFL starter caliber. Not so pretty when I start pointing out what that really is these days.

Tebow is probably middle of the pack quality for the NFL. He would have certainly helped the Jags sell tickets, and would have been competitive with what they were fielding.

Primarily, the protests. Second, the thuggish behavior of too many players. All those other factors just make what was already horrible for the NFL a little bit worse.
