Mueller investigation focusing on social media's role in 2016 election: report

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election is focusing increasingly on how Moscow used social media to disrupt the presidential race, according to a Bloomberg report.

That involves seeking additional information about Russian activities on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook disclosed last week that a Kremlin-linked company purchased more than $100,000 worth of ads on its platform that ran between June 2015 and May 2017.

Those ads were linked to nearly 500 fraudulent accounts that likely operated out of Russia and focused on hot-button issues like immigration and gun control.

Likewise, Twitter is expected to hand over to Congress an analysis of Russian activity on its platform, similar to the one provided by Facebook last week.

Social media has become an increasingly vulnerable target for foreign nations to try to influence the elections and policies of other countries, according to Bloomberg. U.S. intelligence agencies, including the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, are exploring how to prevent future election meddling. Meanwhile, National Intelligence Director Dan Coats warned that Russia is stepping up its cyber operations, saying Wednesday that Moscow has "assumed an even more aggressive cyber posture by increasing cyber espionage operations and leaking data stolen from those operations."

Congressional investigators are also turning their attention increasingly toward the role of social media in Russia's election meddling efforts.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on Tuesday that his panel would likely interview Facebook officials as part of its investigation into Russian interference in the election, according to Bloomberg.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, told Bloomberg that his panel has been talking with tech companies, including Facebook, about the matter.

He is desperate. I expect him to go after President Trump for a spelling error.

Mueller’s investigation is really starting to look like one big huge fishing expedition.

"What do you mean? We'll look until we find something. Now back to my extravagant tax-payer supported lunch."

Why didn't the vastly more lucrative service that Zuckerberg offered Hilliary sway it the other way? You could not get on Facebook without free ads for Democrats, especially her during the campaign.

“So he’s going to arrest Zuckerberg?”

The more likely scenario is that he’ll be coming after us, and similar blogs/sites.

"...focusing increasingly on how Moscow used social media to disrupt the presidential race..."

In other words, Mueller's got nothing.

What does the social media have to do with his original mandate? He was hired on to investigate how the Russians affected our elections. How does what anybody was doing on social media have to do with it?

Now all of Mueller’s expensive lawyers can spend their tax-payer funded time playing on their Faceplant and Twitter.

Mueller is chasing phantoms. IP tracks that can easily be spoofed by high-level actors. This is not evidence that would stand up I any real court. He’s just playing to the cameras.

And is this hot dog special prosecutor going to investigate how much Soros spent in trying to disrupt the presidential race? Or would that not fit the narrative he’s after?

So many are missing the point on this.

Yeah, Mueller is trying to bring down Trump and punish anyone who was significant in his campaign and pre-campaign business deals etc.

But THIS move is to get Facebook, Twitter and Google to turn over the internet records of all the peasants who use them to the ‘star chambers’. The NSA collecting the data isn’t enough for them, they want everything, without even the sham of pretending to go through the FISA judges.

Right now China is known to activate communist cells in Taiwan, Venezuela and possibly the US.... will Mueller investigate that too or is it just a witch hunt with no regard for national security?

Yeah, same Mueller who’probably was target of a Muslim Brotherhood campaign in the bazillions...

This guy is a big problem. He is covering up for crimes and is blackmailed.
