Today is the anniversary of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and the death of Pliny the Elder (born A.D. 23) in that event. The eruption, which followed several years of precursor ground movements, buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and is thought to have killed as many as 15,000 people.

Subsequent major eruptions occurred in 1631, 1906, and 1944, the last just after the Allies had taken the city of Naples in World War II. Pliny the Elder is remembered primarily for his "Natural History," a comprehensive compendium of ancient knowledge of the natural world. His scientific curiosity led him to take ship across the Bay of Naples to see the Vesuvius eruption at close quarters, and he was killed there by ash and poisonous fumes from the volcano. The account of his nephew and adopted son, Pliny the Younger (A.D. 61-ca. 114), is the only eyewitness description we have of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and it goes on to provide further detail about on-site conditions near the disaster and his own experiences farther afield.

I first read Pliny the Younger's account of the eruption in the excellent "Eyewitness to History", a book that I've also given to several kids and grandkids. I highly recommend it.

Apparently they dismissed global warming concerns.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Many fine online tours of Pompei and Herculaneum. Amazing stuff.

An appropriate time to pull up YouTube and watch Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” live from Pompeii. Turn It Up...

Its been said that God caused the eruption because Pompeii was a heindonistic, homosexual depraved village.

I was stationed in Naples, Italy from 1983 to 1986. Visited Pompei ruins many times and was always fascinated with the ruins and history of this historic event. Also got to watch the excavation of Herculaneum over these years and was amazed to see archaeologists do their work.

Herculaneum (Ercolono) also destroyed and there you can see the preserved skeletons of the citizens who took shelter down at the harbor warehouses. Pompeii doesn’t have that.

The entire Live At Pompeii movie is awesome! I also liked the part where the different band members are working in the studio on sound effects, riffs, etc... for The Dark Side Of The Moon. Great stuff!

Was there a few months ago. When you see those skeletons at Herculaneum it really hits home as to how terrible an event it must have been.

There’s a new DVD coming out with David Gilmour playing at Pompeii.

What a fascinating video. I was raised at the base of Mt. Shasta and almost bought a farm at the base of Mt. St. Helen. Went fishing in the caldera of Medicine Lake and honeymooned in Yellowstone. I’ve always feared that my luck would run out. So now I live in the Midwest.

Yes, I'm back. I had been under a de facto ban -- unable to post, reply to email, or edit my profile. I won't be as active with ping lists as I was in times past.

An excellent book indeed.

And as a recommended sidekick, a book entitled “The Last Time When” by George Gipe.
