59,000 farmer suicides in India over 30 years may be linked to climate change, study says

Every year, thousands of Indian farmers commit suicide. Now one researcher thinks it may have something to do with climate change.

Tamma Carleton, a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, compared almost five decades worth of suicide and climate data and concluded that temperature variations in India may have “a strong influence” on suicide rates during the growing season.

In her study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Carleton estimates that more than 59,000 farmer suicides over the past 30 years can be linked to global warming.

Carleton’s findings are particularly worrisome and come just two months after the Trump administration pulled out of the Paris climate accord, which was adopted by 196 countries, including the United States under the Obama administration in December 2015. ...... After President Trump pulled out of the accord, many countries, including India and China, said they would continue to honor their commitments under the accord.

(snip)

According to the World Health Organization, India accounts for the highest number of suicides in the world. A staggering 133,623 people took their own lives in 2015, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau. More than 12,000 of those were farmers and agricultural laborers, almost one-tenth of the total.

over the last 30 years- farmers have committed suicides in direct relation to increasing abortions world-wide- as abortions increased- so did suicides by farmers-

either that or it was the invention of bubblicious bubble gum- ever since the invention of this fantastic bubble gum farmers suicides have increased exponentially-

however, the increase could also correspond with increased consumption of TAB diet soda- it can’t be just coincidence that TAB consumption and suicide deaths increased at the same time

Or- it ‘could be’

I roamed around India for several weeks in the past couple years. I saw many reasons for anyone living there to kill themselves...weather fluctuations weren’t among them. Sheesh...this “researcher” is brain-addled.

Correlation = Causation

Those weren't suicides! As we all know, there are fewer pirates on the oceans. That means the pirates are now on land. The pirates are killing Indian farmers!

exactly- the poverty is overwhelming there- pollution is horrible- trash everywhere- country is massively overcrowded- and the poor are exploited terribly- in many cases- That researcher is a liar- there are many many reasons over there why folks would off themselves- extreme poverty being a big one

Probably stress from trying to grow crops in a desert.

Sam Kinison was crude but his solution for global hunger had some truth in it. Send them some boxes and a uhaul truck. It’s a desert!! Nothing grows there!! Nothings going to grow there!!!

Bah. It’s probably over the monetary change that India has been slashburning its lower tier demographics.

The change from a cash-based system to a demonitized one is a more reasonable explanation than admitting to the cashless cabal that people are being hurt and badly by this wholesale plunge into new system.

You guys raised some very interesting points. Let me add my own observation....

Well, let's see, what we didn't have in the last 5 decades? The ubiquitous cell phones/tablets, flat screen/HD tvs, hover boards, drones, ..... it could anything. But there are no studies of those to the farmer's suicides in India. Hmmmmm.

OK, let's be serious. STOP FUNDING bogus research, already !!!!!

How about a short list of things that AREN’T caused by climate change? I’ve already seen the long list of things that ARE caused by it.

Interesting study.

Since 10% of suicides are by farmers, and 50% of India’s population are farmers, it is proof positive THAT GLOBULL WARMING IS POSITIVE for India’s farmers since they have a much lower suicide rate than the rest of the population.

My observation as well. Of course, the dimwit libs who worship at the altar of AGW will just uncritically drink this down, and share it time and time again on their Facebook echo chambers.
