The NFL took a massive ratings dive last year after a number of players, led by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, refused to stand for the National Anthem. At the time, NFL officials claimed they didn't exactly know why ratings were down and even used the 2016 presidential election as an excuse for why more people weren't watching.
But according to a new survey from J.D. Power, NFL fans did in fact tune out in droves because of the disrespect and protest of the National Anthem before games. From ESPN:
National anthem protests were the top reason that NFL fans watched fewer games last season, according to a new survey released by J.D. Power.
The pollster said it asked more than 9,200 people who attended either one football, basketball or hockey game whether they tuned into fewer games and why. Twenty-six percent of those who watched fewer games last season said that national anthem protests, some of which were led by Colin Kaepernick, were the reason.
After that, 24 percent of those surveyed who said they watched fewer games said they did so either because of the league's off-the-field image issues with domestic violence or with game delays, including penalties. After being dropped from the 49ers last year, sports pundits and fellow players have accused anyone and everyone of racism for Kaepernick's failure to resign with another team. Turns out he's not only a bad quarterback, but a business liability.
Patriotism is still winning in America and that's a good thing. Here's to hoping this season comes with more respect on the field from players who are privileged to live in the greatest country on earth.
Ya, that gets me too. It’s not that I opposed women reporters necessarily, but, they clearly have no knowledge of football, and they are asking questions that add nothing to the broadcast.
Add the first two, 26 and 24 percent and you have 50% that are sick and tired of the NFL catering to anti-american and social “causes” instead of just remaining neutral and playing football.
"What the Hell is going on, out here?"
That's ANOTHER thing that I don't like. Thanks for the reminder.
has o be the Freak of Nature with the Brillo haircut...
I agree. I used to watch a lot of NFL games, but I just can’t stand watching anymore. The politics, the commercials, I just have no interest in spending my time watching that anymore - particularly when I know a fair number of the players don’t even like me because of what they think I represent.
It’s not just Krappydink, it is every entertainer that disrespects the anthem by “personalizing” it. Anthem comes on, I mute the TV and sing to myself. Not about to listen to some idiot butcher it.
Which reminds me, Canadian teams play “Oh, Canada” and nobody butchers that anthem.
It is also the “Pink October” BS.
It is also the commercials after TD, after ensuing kick-off, during replays, and on and on.
Which is why I DVR games and watch them as I wish.
It is also the idiot reporterettes asking, “What do you need to do to get back in this game?”
“DUH! Score more points.”
I don’t think I watched a single regular season game. Not sure if I will this year, either.
The protests, yes, but also everyone is tired of watching the Patriots.
Just sick of the same thing seen over and over again.
The NFL just has to raise ticket prices. That will fix the problem.
Never been happier or had more cash in my pocket.
If they don’t respect our flag, they aren’t part of any American sport. Don’t take us fo r granted.
I figured I could stick it to big media by not watching the NFL. The TV and print reporters always take the liberal side be it “hands up don’t shoot” or not standing for the national anthem, or Costas rant on gun control. I saw less than 10 plays last year. Will see none this year.
Sick of the thuggification of the NFL in general, including the complete unfair treatment of white players from college on up. Enjoyed only watching the Patriots offense. The only coach not buying into the agenda is Bellicheck.
Ghetto opera! I hate it as well, if you don’t know the words or can’t sing just stop it, don’t sing if offered the chance.
To all of the SJW’s at ESPN who denied this obvious explanation: SUCK IT!
I watch a lot of baseball, always have, for those of you that watched the World Series last year - you didn’t see any of that BS. The teams lined up respectfully on the baselines during the National Anthem. Being a Cub fan I watch most of the games on Cox Sports Net and, strangely, the announcers talk about baseball the ENTIRE game.
I don’t know if it is the same in all markets (San Fran Giants???) but so far it doesn’t make me mad to watch it.
anyone rehiring Kaepernick would spark ANOTHER multi-billion loss for the NFL.
Just this morning ESPN had a segment all about kaepernick.
As soon as his mug appeared on the tv i turned the channel.
They both can kiss my ass and go to hell.
When the fat, middle-aged white guy with the mustard stain on his shirt stops giving a damn about the NFL, it’s over.
