His heirs didn’t know his wife had died?? So nobody in their lives ever said , gee, haven’t heard from her in a while, wonder how she’s doing, let’s contact her?? Did they ever talk to him and then did he say she was fine ??
I know some people stick to themselves and don’t go out or visit people, but still sounds odd.
Reminds me of an episode of Joe Kenda Homicide Hunter. Two black sisters were living with each other and on Social Security. One died and she was wrapped in newspapers and left on the couch with a sheet like cover. The other sister continued to receive both Social Security checks.

It’s sad the number of people that fall into the government dependence trap and only have social security at retirement. I know several here in Thailand that social security is their only income.

I poked for the California Youth Authority. Circa 1985, A ward in the institution in Chino, received social security checks, survivors benefits. He was an orphan. He was an orphan because he killed his parents.
An accountant caught it. How can this guy get social security? four days later the issue was on the governors desk. Two months later, the benefit was held back if you killed your parents.

Pension fraud is rampant in Japan, where many have collected a deceased's pension for decades.
