The Big Sick has been roundly lauded in the press lately, including here at Jezebel, and not without good reason: it’s a funny, heartwarming love story based on the true-life experiences of cowriters/married couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. But as much as I liked it—and I did—I also found myself exhausted, yet again, by the onscreen depiction of a brown man wanting to date a white woman, while brown women are portrayed alternately as caricatures, stereotypes, inconsequential, and/or the butts of a joke.

While you see a lot of Black men who date white women. The reverse of that, other than in, say, Los Angeles and New York, you just don’t see a lot of Black Women who date White Men.
I hate to say it, but down here in the South, a Black Man dating a White Woman, it’s almost a status kind of deal.

The author must not watch many movies. I’ve seen loads of them with white guys falling for black, brown, asian, etc, women and a lot of those women are smoking hot. Which is the great thing about movies.

As far as interracial relationships go a comedian once said it is good for minorities to raise their sights and white women to lower their standards.
I go to access my Chase account, and there’s an image of two guys in front of a house with a realtor. It says something like, “Jake and Josh have each other. And when they’re buying their first house, they have Chase.” Wonderful.

I worked in different parts of Canada and worked with people of many different races, cultures, nationalities. The ABF phenomenon seems much more prominent among North American black women and those immigrants who have become involved with race focused advocacy groups. I met some lovely black women from the Caribbean, South America and African countries who were very charming, strong and successful, but without the Claire Huxtable ‘tude.
I have read that white women rarely date brown males, unless the woman is very overweight or the guy has mucho much money. The source backed the statement up with the numbers. Politically incorrect, but if someone has the diversity numbers, I am all ears.
