Competition in the U.S. grocery sector is about to get more fierce.
Discount grocery chain Aldi is expected to unveil on Monday plans to invest $5 billion to open nearly 900 stores and remodel hundreds more in the U.S.
The expansion, over the next five years, puts the German grocer on track to becoming the third-largest food retailer in the U.S. by store count, behind the larger Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kroger Co., and a growing threat to traditional food retailers.
Aldi said it is expected to have a total of 2,500 locations across the U.S. by 2022. Its plan comes as another German discounter, Lidl, is set to open its first 10 stores in the U.S. on Thursday as part of a multiyear expansion.
Executives at Wal-Mart and Kroger have been preparing for the growth of the discounters for years. Wal-Mart has been sprucing up its stores and slashing prices on some products in select markets, while Kroger continues to drive down costs to compete.....

Instead of food shopping at one store in the old daze, it’s now ~10 different stores to get various items. Pantry inventory required. It’s crazy....
Aldi does not require a yearly membership fee, unlike Costco. And I do not need large quantities of any item, which Costco seems to stock.
You must not have tried their ice cream puff! They are to die for. Their chocolate covered cream puff are also fantastic.
“No name merchandise. I personally dont like it.”
Yes. They have brands I never heard of. Like Costco.
The product is high quality. Prices low.
I wholeheartedly recommend Aldi.
Actually its around $12-13 an hour starting pay at Aldis. Or were you referring to someone else?
...
I think only about three people run the store on a shift so that money has to be earned.
Where is the list/map of new locations?
They have decent food. Too bad the one nearest me is destroyed by the customers everyday.
Whole Foods is a parallel universe to me. Both items for sale and personnel.
Trader Joe’s and Aldi’s were started by brothers. Practically the same stuff only Aldi’s cheaper. Sure hope they put a few in Oregon.
It’s $12 plus here in upstate NY. Love the store...Save lotsa money.
We have both stores in town, though both stores are small and don’t carry a yuge selection. I shop at both for specific items I prefer and no one else carries.
And kids are all grown so don't have to share!!

Whole affords is very expensive too.
I don’t shop there. The only thing I find at Whole Foods (and not all of them) is cheese curds. They are hard to find where I live.
Good...maybe they can end the “food deserts” the libs are always yammering about. Americans are clearly malnourished.
Big news day for grocers with Amazon buying Whole Foods to probably move away from physical stores now this to add 900 more stores.
Aldi’s is open in the Atlanta metro area....It is good for some things, Kroger for others, Publix less....
Sam’s Club gets a fair amount of my business...
Some of Aldi’s no-name products are superior to national brands....others I wouldn’t buy....
They do offer a full refund if you buy a product and don’t like it....
My nephew shops Walmart on the west bank in N.O. He took a photo of MOVING MAGGOTS in boudin sausage in the store case! The manager said it was “normal”! This was last week. I hope he reported it to the health Dept but inspections down here aren’t very diligent t.
Trader Joes and Aldi are owned by the same German company. Many of their items are the same: same ingredients, same size and same shape packaging, just different labels.
It’s a ‘different’ shopping experience.
I’m very used to it as i thought I read that the first US one opened in Burlington IA in the 70’s.
Quality is generally pretty good to excellent.
I don’t like most of their store brand chips/snacks but most everything else is fine.
Bring your own bags and be prepared to do your own grocery bagging (which I prefer anyway - having worked 4 years in a grocery store and learned the proper way)
Bring a quarter for the shopping cart, which you get back when it is returned to the proper location (no runaway carts to ding your cars!)
Most of their stock is normally there, but they have a tendency to buy special purchase stuff and if you get hooked on it be prepared to never see it again.
After you’ve loaded up your cart and wondered, “Is this going to be $150?” It turns out to be about $110. Big Big savings.
Better than most of the brand crap.
No-Name Groceries. No thanks. Sometimes, though, “house brands” are terrific. I don’t shop at Safeway much, but when I do, I go straight for their “Safeway Organics” products, which are reliably very high quality—even better than boutiquey health food markets. Quality is very important to me.
