I think that when you blame the "rhetoric", you impugn the freedom of speech. I say that anyone who could be goaded into committing a murder that will most certainly lead to your own death, then you already have an incredibly weak and malleable mind.

No, I'd say that the blame lies solely with the individual who commits such an act regardless of the rhetoric. He may have used the violent rhetoric coming from the left to build his confidence and further justify his planned actions, but the fault lies squarely at the feet of the individuals who choose to conduct such atrocities.

I agree with you philosophically about free speech... no one should be held responsible for someone else’s actions. If someone is nutzo violent, then they are nutzo violent, regardless if they supported Bernie Sanders or Col.Sanders.

The problem here is a massive double standard in the media and in our culture. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THIS WHOLE THING WOULD HAVE COME DOWN LIKE IT DID IN THE MEDIA IF THIS GUY TARGETED DEMOCRATS AND WAS AN AVID TRUMP SUPPORTER.

What is more, the media that helped incite him and many other radical violent segments of the population, would never stand for it if some right wing talking-heads or publications got even remotely close to the vile vitriol that they themselves frequently spew.

Is it free speech or isn’t it?

Newt is right. For example, CNN is 97% negative Trump news and commentary, much of it inflammatory.

Only Fox News was almost even-handed at 52% - 48% negative/positive.

When does rhetoric become advocacy implying violence is legitimate?

I think that when you blame the "rhetoric", you impugn the freedom of speech.

When you blame the rhetoric you are exercising freedom of speech.

If you don't think "rhetoric" can be blamed for inciting violence, then you don't know history.

This nut job was inspired by the vile rhetoric of, among others, Bernie Sanders and Rachel Maddow.

Is "free speech" intended to defend pure deceit. The only thing the Dems seem unable to ever say is any truth. There was a law passed recently protecting political lies. The bible says when Satan lies he speaks his native tongue.

We disregard biblical doctrine in our politics at our peril.

Here is an example. In the OT the penalty for lying is whatever damage you intended to inflict with the lie is inflicted upon you. Today there is no penalty when people lie with their "Hands up don't shoot" or any other lie.

The fringe base of the democrat party has lost all sense of civility and decency. This the legacy of our first community organizer in chief. There is no tolerance of the left, only intolerance and tyranny. And this guy was parroting on social media what Rachel Madcow and the rest of the #Fakenews colluders were spewing, which is extreme hate.

Words do make a difference. I believe in freedom of speech, but I recognize that there is speech which causes issues in a variety of ways that extend beyond simple speech.

I was reading an account of a soldier in a combat zone who had been wronged by an unpopular officer, and he began spouting off about how it would be too bad if a live grenade just happened to roll into that officer’s tent, etc. Everyone else who hated the officer would kind of mumble assent, recognizing the person was just blowing off steam, but the person kept saying things like that over a period of time to the point someone had to pull him aside and say “Look, I know how you feel, but you have to give that talk a break. If you don’t, some guy walking the edge of stability is going eventually do something because they think it is acceptable or right, so just stop.” (paraphrased)

In these cases of speech, I believe it parallels that somewhat. Personally, I think all liberals are simply unbalanced by their very nature, many to the point of being mentally ill. When they hear these calls to slaughter Republicans or conservatives that emanate from movies, theater, comedy, political pundits and such...I think there are many of them who are ill equipped to handle it appropriately.

The problem is, outlawing “violent speech” is that it is often open to interpretation, and liberals are incapable of a reasonable interpretation. Or, as the other poster implied, there will be a significant double standard in both interpretation and prosecution.

If a liberal says “We must put a bullet in the head of President X.” and gets called on it, it was art, a joke, taken out of context, etc. If a conservative says “The bombing will begin in five minutes” it is conservative hate speech, even though it is pretty clear it is a joke.

I think threats should be treated differently.

There is rhetoric and there is incitement to violence and they are two different things. If you whip a crowd into committing a criminality you should should be held responsible. You caused it.

the left seems to always be squawking about their rights, but you never hear them talk about their responsibilities. Public figures have a responsibility to behave civilly and speak honestly. they have a responsibility to speak out against horrible acts like the shooting and like the filthy Caesar play and the beheaded trump effigy.

The left’s failure to condemn the violent rhetoric and violent actions can reasonably be seen as their consent and approval. Their attempts to spin this as being Trump’s fault are absolutely abysmal and unacceptable and they need to be held to account.

NY Times Tipped Off Shooter to GOP Practice Field Around Time He Moved to Area

Jim Hoft Jun 14th, 2017 7:41 pm 464 Comments

Republican Representative Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip, and two Capitol Police were shot during baseball practice on Wednesday morning.

Scalise was shot in the hip and tried to drag himself off the field after he was shot.

The shooter, James T. Hodgkinson was a Bernie supporter who was obsessed with Trump-Russia conspiracy theories. He is now dead.

The New York Times tipped off the GOP shooter on the GOP baseball practice field in an April article.

While we all should enjoy free speech, the vitriol, contempt and utter hatred against Trump by the now disenfranchised left is exhibiting is over the top. CNN has become a 24/7 imitation of Orwell’s “Two Minute Hate” with Trump’s image replacing that of Emmanuel Goldstein.

We need to turn these idiots off. don’t watch these ass clowns anymore. All of them and pass the word.

Don’t know how else to combat them. We need to declare a War on the Media. What, write/complain to sponsors?...don’t know but I’m fed up to the very top of my oversized cranium....and I’m smack dab in loony leftville...

“I think that when you blame the “rhetoric”, you impugn the freedom of speech.”

Nobodies calling for new laws on speach. Nobody is calling for firings. (People may be talking about individual or group boycotts, the consumers prerogative in a free market.)

We are in a cultural war. You’d argue that violence shaming is inappropriate? Are you worried it’s a microagression or mansplaining?

And according to authorities, Hodgkinson came to the ball field with enough firepower to terminate many Republican lawmakers. <<<

Come on Newt!...you know all the “authorities” .....Name the fire power...AK-47? (woodstock model)...AR 14-15-16 ??...30-30?... on and on...

How many rounds are enough?..Semi-automatic?....Banana clips?...you know how important that is to a story to make the nightly news...

(devils advocate here.....)

The best statement is:
I say that anyone who could be goaded into committing a murder that will most certainly lead to your own death, then you already have an incredibly weak and malleable mind.<<

completely different topic..but muslims come to mind...Get the connection????
