Gingrich minces no words, blames violent rhetoric
One News Now ^ | 6/15/17 | Chad Groening

A conservative pundit and former Republican leader says there's no doubt that Wednesday's shooting at an Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field was politically motivated.

Several Republican lawmakers were practicing early Wednesday morning for the annual charity baseball game between them and House Democrats when the shooting occurred. Wounded in the attack were House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) and several others. At press time, Scalise was in critical condition following surgery.

The shooter, who has since died from gun battle with police, has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson. His Facebook page featured a photo of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders at the top, and was filled with left-wing political posts throughout. His entries were highly critical of President Trump and supported Sanders' socialist political philosophy. The 66-year-old man was a member of a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party." And according to authorities, Hodgkinson came to the ball field with enough firepower to terminate many Republican lawmakers.

During an appearance on the Fox News Channel, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich addressed the increasing intensity of hostility on the Left.

"Whether it is a so-called comedian holding up the president's head in blood, or it's right here in New York City a play that shows the president being assassinated, or it's Democratic leading national politicians who are so angry they have to use vulgarity," he lamented. "This intensity has been building I think since election night."

And when one Fox panel member questioned the timing of Gingrich's remarks, he didn't back down.

"You've had a series of things which sends signals that tell people that it's okay to hate Trump, it's okay to think of Trump in violent terms, it's okay to consider assassinating Trump. And then suddenly we're supposed to rise above it – until the next time?" he asked.

The leaders of both parties have decided to move forward and play the game Thursday night as scheduled.

[[When does rhetoric become advocacy implying violence is legitimate?]]

They are advocating .
They are flat out paying people to demonstrate and beat people. That MUST be held accountable for this. The victems NEED to drag into court and hold them responsible for advocating . The problem is we don’t hold them account for they are doing.

Perfect post. You nailed it.

This is not an argument about Free Speech. It’s about Hypocrisy.

The Left owns the media and have told everyone that Speech Can Be Free Only If It Meets The Needs of Leftists. To them free speech must first pass through their homophobe/xenophobe/racist/sexist/any stretch of the imagination judgmental filters. There are only two groups of whom free speech against them is still allowed: the Right and Christians.

Ben Garrison gets it. I don’t know when he made that particular cartoon, but it should have been of the Bernie bot who tried to assassinate Republican congresspeople.

That cartoon is missing Obama, “If they bring a knife, you bring a gun” gem.

Nothing made it clearer to me than this morning, when I saw the angry little leftist killer complaining that the 99% were getting screwed and the 1% didn’t care.

It is the left’s use of class warfare, making everyone think that they’re victims, republicans don’t care, republican’s plan for your health care is to die, and on and on. Speech that incites violence, I thought, was not legal. The dems entire game plan is to make people who may not have much, either materially or intellectually, angry and active. Well, this is the ONLY logical end.

If the left is spinning this heinous assassination attempt as Trump’s fault, isn’t that like saying “Do what we want and no one gets hurt?”

While we all should enjoy free speech, the vitriol, contempt and utter hatred against Trump by the now disenfranchised left is exhibiting is over the top. CNN has become a 24/7 imitation of Orwell’s “Two Minute Hate” with Trump’s image replacing that of Emmanuel Goldstein.

We need to turn these idiots off. don’t watch these ass clowns anymore. All of them and pass the word.

Don’t know how else to combat them. We need to declare a War on the Media. What, write/complain to sponsors?...don’t know but I’m fed up to the very top of my oversized cranium....and I’m smack dab in loony leftville...

When does rhetoric become advocacy implying violence is legitimate?

Is Newt saying that the rhetoric has become advocacy, or that it is the cause? When he says that it is to blame, that implies that it is the cause.

Have you forgotten that they are paying people to beat people up ? They need to be held accountable too

Agreed. Hold everyone accountable for their actions including assault, attempted murder, even for paying someone to commit acts of violence. All of these actions need to be prosecuted.

“I think that when you blame the “rhetoric”, you impugn the freedom of speech.”

Nobodies calling for new laws on speach. Nobody is calling for firings. (People may be talking about individual or group boycotts, the consumers prerogative in a free market.)

We are in a cultural war. You’d argue that violence shaming is inappropriate? Are you worried it’s a microagression or mansplaining?

I'd argue that the shooter is to blame.

I agree.

AND...we have among us (always have) mentally ill people and/or people who are susceptible to suggestion. You’d argue the media bares no responsibility for inciting such people with violent rhetoric?

Let’s extrapolate on your argument.

A Russian created a social media site whereby people encourage other people to commit suicide -and they have committed suicide. By your argument, it’s reasonable to extrapolate that only the person committing suicide is to blame?

Again, this is a culture war.

Come on Newt!...you know all the “authorities” .....Name the fire power...AK-47? (woodstock model)...AR 14-15-16 ??...30-30?... on and on...

How many rounds are enough?..Semi-automatic?....Banana clips?...you know how important that is to a story to make the nightly news...

(devils advocate here.....)

The best statement is:
I say that anyone who could be goaded into committing a murder that will most certainly lead to your own death, then you already have an incredibly weak and malleable mind.<<

completely different topic..but muslims come to mind...Get the connection????

I can defend personal responsibility. It’s much easier to defend than the new, socialist/liberal position of blaming society and others, which you have decided to do.

This is indeed a culture war and you don’t do yourself any favors by ceding ground to the opposition and admitting that society is to blame for the actions of individuals.

That girl was found guilty of “involuntary manslaughter” for egging her boyfriend on. The amount of fault she bears is minimal compared to the amount her boyfriend bears for the decision that he chose to make. Ultimately, the decision was up to him, and he was responsible for making it.
