The acting U.S. ambassador to China, David Rank, has reportedly resigned from his post over President Trumps decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, according to a new report.
CNN reports that several sources familiar with the matter say Ranks decision was directly tied to Trumps decision to remove the U.S. from the accord, though his replacement in Beijing has already been approved by the Senate.
"Mr. Rank made a personal decision," a senior State Department official told CNN. "We appreciate his years of dedicated service to the State Department."
Rank has served as the deputy chief of mission at the embassy since January 2016 and had assumed the acting ambassador role until Trumps choice for ambassador, former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R), officially takes over. Rank has served in the foreign service since 1990, working in the Office of Afghanistan Affairs and the Office of Korean Affairs and serving in Taipei, Shanghai, Athens and Mauritius.
Rank becomes the second U.S. ambassador to publicly split with Trump in the past few days. Acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Lewis Lukens publicly praised London Mayor Sadiq Khan for his response to this weekends terrorist attack on Sunday after Trump criticized him on Twitter.
I commend the strong leadership of the Mayor of London as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack, Lukens wrote.
Earlier Sunday, Trump criticized Khan for his comments following the weekend attack that killed at least seven people and wounded dozens more.
Trump appeared to be referencing Khans comments earlier in the day in which he said there was no reason to worry about the increased police presence in London.
LOL, love the way you worded that!
I was going to post “Whatever shall we do?”
Ambassadors are the figure heads. The guy who does all the work is #2.
Good. I guess it is a “you can’t fire me, I quit” moment for this jackal. Good riddance.
Did Beijing cut off his allowance?
Whats the Chinese word for Sayonara?..Wee bie-bye?
KT McFarland was named to that spot in China, correct? Maybe that was just rumor floated, but I know I regretted hearing of her being assigned outside of the Trump’s immediate adviser circle.
However, Trump needs a trust worthy over in China, that’s for certain. KT is all that, and more.
Self-draining swamp.
Is this like self-deporting?
His replacement seems reasonable but this guy is pretty rank.
And his replacement was already approved by the Senate? Sounds to me like his decision was made long ago and it had nothing to do with Climate change...........Fake news?
He may be a quack, but I respect him for being honest enough to quit. Better than those that backstab from within the administration.
So he’s also choosing a Muslim city mayor over the American President?
Cancel his passport. Make China keep him.
Drain the swamp!
Phony article ....
He agreed to stay until his replacement.
Done and contriving a new excuse is lame...
LOL, a Win-Win! I’m good with that!
Is Rank GAY????
“though his replacement in Beijing has already been approved by the Senate.”
So, basically, he tried to get a headline out of being already fired.
I know there is a lot to be done between the election and inauguration but if it were me, a letter would be sent prior asking for the resignations of all previous appointees. You can also add you would consider holding them over BUT you wanted that letter or your dismissal would be my FIRST official act.
Especially with the turmoil that was taking place with the OUTGOING pResident. It may be a tad different if you defeated him in his reelection.
Now, all these guys are still in place, lobbing hand grenades at will, coming up with off the wall statements, then using something else to resign, when almost 6 months into the new regime, they should have already been gone.
If the Bush people would have even THOUGHT about acting like these BO holdovers are acting, they all would have been brought up on Civil Rights charges - if for at least undermining a minority
