The US Federal Communications Commission will look into complaints made against talk show host Stephen Colbert for what some have labelled a homophobic joke about President Donald Trump.
Colbert faced a backlash following the Monday night airing of The Late Show, during which he made numerous jokes about Trump during his opening monologue.
Among them, he said: "The only thing [Trump's] mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin's c**k holster."
Viewers took to social media to declare Colbert's joke homophobic.
The hashtag #FireColbert began spreading around Twitter, along with calls for people to boycott sponsors of the late-night show.
"I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints, and we've gotten a number of them, we are going to take the facts that we find and we are going to apply the law as it's been set out by the Supreme Court and other courts and we'll take the appropriate action," FCC chairman Ajit Pai told Philadelphia's Talk Radio 1210 WPHT.
Colbert responded to the controversy during his opening monologue on Wednesday, saying he regretted his choice of words but stopped short of an apology.
"So while I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be," he said.
"I'm not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero," he said.
"I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But, that."
Colbert is disgusting, but the FCC isn’t going to do anything to him. Around fifty years ago, the SCOTUS declared as long as a publication has some non-prurient value, it’s ok. That’s how Playboy Magazine got away with its nudies. And, as everyone knows, it was the top notch articles that kept guys buying it all those years....ahem.
Besides, every evil thing under the sun is on cable 24/7.
if he made a jewish joke of Kushner, he would be out of the job. Let’s hope he goes that way. Oy vey!
I hope every group under the sun cries foul.
What’s disturbing to me is not Colbert, you can always switch to another channel; but the audience reaction. The seem to enjoy the anti-Trump ‘humor’. IMO
Quite indecent for public television..but I really don’t know these days.
I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I’m - so, kind of at an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards, so I think I’ll just conclude here and take your questions. - Ann Coulter
Talentless Colbert opens his mouth and removes all doubt that he is a slime ball.
I can’t boycott because I don’t watch him anymore, and I have watched him in all of his boring performances.
CBS is watching Colbert's ratings go through the roof.
That’s ridiculous and you know it. An insult to all Catholics here on FR.
But if the FCC even uses the word "investigation," I would suspect it means researching precedents to determine what kind of fine, or airtime suspension, might be appropriate.
If there are no sanctions against Colbert and CBS, then all guidelines about what is permitted on TV are obsolete.
His comments were rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. But worthy of an investigation by the bureaucracy? Oh, he crossed the PC “pink” line. We can’t have that now can we.
And do abso-f%#king-lutely nothing about it. The FCC is a toothless, arthritic old hound dog.
I believe because the offensive words were bleeped, the FCC really doesn’t have a dog in the fight. That’s why I deferred to CBS. And you’re probably right. Colbert’s ratings have already been hot. That may have made them hotter.
The only acceptable sanction is the firing of Col-Bert.
Even the clips one sees don’t seem at all funny to me. I guess one has to be high on weed or whatnot to get the joke.
“Thats not as homophobic as it is profane.”
No. Obscene....yes. Vulgar.....yes. Not profane because it does not insult God.
Our typical “four letter words” are vulgarities.
Telling someone to go to Hell or using the Lord’s name in vain are profanities.
Both can be obscenities depending upon usage.
I strongly recommend the book “Reading Between the Lines” by Gene Edward Veith for an excellent treatment on the use of language in literature and daily life.
Oh yeah. Colbert is a slimeball.
He is not a comedian. George Burns, Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis were comedians. He is nothing more than an outlet for the left to unleash their hatred for Trump.
I don't think it's meant to be funny as much as it's meant to garner personal relevance to Ko-Bear and reaffirm to his viewers that he's a member of the "cool kids" club. The "Ask me about my Feminist Agenda" group of leftist men and women types. Now if you're a man and a homosexual, you're an "American hero" (says Ko-Bear)
They've had their time. Fundamental to the country functioning is that its citizens accept the rule of law and the results of elections. They've reached the point where it's now about disrespecting the Presidency and the results of elections because Trump is President.
That doesn't lead anywhere good.
