It's rare that a governor shows up to celebrate a new condo tower.
But this one's made of wood, and that's a bigger deal than it seems.
Gov. Kate Brown was on hand the day Carbon12 in North Portland reached its full eight stories and became the nation's tallest wood building. The feat was made possible by cross-laminated timber, wood engineered to have the strength of steel.
The distinction won't last long. Another Portland development, an 11story high-rise made of the same wood product, is expected to secure a building permit within weeks and start construction this summer.
For Oregon, cross-laminated timber represents a chance to revive the moribund wood products industry, restoring logging and manufacturing jobs in rural communities where the state's natural resources give it a clear advantage over foreign competitors.
The state is investing hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to promote CLT. Right now, only a handful of buildings in the U.S. have been built with it, and most are in Oregon....

Let's hope the engineers know what they are doing.
One thing about wood: at high temperatures, it keeps its strength longer that steel.
Steel beams, at high temperatures, lose strength rapidly and collapse. At that point, the building goes down immediately.
Yes, wood will eventually burn up. But a beam that has started to burn will hold its strength for some time. Char slows down the burning process.

“Oregon pushes for wooden skyscrapers to revive timber industry”
What?? Is sanity regaining a foothold in Oregon? The government has been owned by environazis there for ages. They killed the timber industry - I have a hard time believing this story.
Russian forest management?
“We are with state logging company. you live here? Leave now. We have nice apartment for you in Semipalatinsk. No, you misunderstand. not phrased as question. Leave now.”

Actually, my timber working (@40 yrs) husband said these beams are as good as steel....but he laughs at how wood in Oregon has been hated for @30 yrs....and suddenly wood is in...and hes about retirement ready
Might check with Chicago and San Francisco as to what can happen to a wooden city. Rome, for that matter. Some people never learn.
Termites? Wood bees?
These buildings would be easy to bug.

Soon California democrats will show up and protest her, blaming Trump for it.
And yet they can’t have a paper bag.

Your husband is correct.
Heavy timber is a better-safer structural building material than steel concerning fire. The char will go only an inch or better deep and insulate the interior. Timber is actually an exceptional building material for tall buildings. It is however, an engineered product.
Woods are different.
Balsa is ok for use in model, and some real, aircraft. But I would not want a baseball bat made of Balsa.
Neither would I want the aft main shaft strut bearings in a nuclear submarine, battleship, or destroyer made of Balsa. For that I would use the wood from Lignum Vitae.
Snowflake madness
fire, wood rot, and more....
And for the nose of a Polaris missile, Sitka spruce!
