It seems as if everyone in the mainstream media world is taking a fresh look at their style guides this year for some reason. (*cough*) First we saw the Associated Press preparing to twist their pronouns in strange and unusual directions to avoid offending transgender activists. Now, thanks to some sharp work at The Daily Caller, we learn that the New York Times has grown unhappy with the old list of racially insensitive terms and may be adding a few more.
A group of New York Times journalists released a list of racial terms they find bothersome Sunday.
NYTs Race/Related team included terms likeethnic, person of color and illegal immigrant among those they found slightly offensive.
John Eligon, the papers national correspondent, found ethnica troublesome term because it normalizes whiteness.
The letter reads more like something out of a debate class syllabus at a liberal arts college than a guide to modern English usage.

Criminal alien it is then!
In a way, he is right about “ethnic “. But it doesn’t normalize whiteness, it dismisses it. In other words, it’s as though those of Norwegian, German, French, British, etc. heritage have no ethnicity; no culture that matters. Just a bland nothingness, while anyone who has a higher level of melanin has a rich cultural heritage.
We need to stop focusing on the levels of melanin as a way of defining people. All people have a cultural heritage, all people have an ethnicity. We all come from various ethnic groups. Our ethnicity is only part of who we are, and it is certainly not the most important part.
That name tag idea must be a great icebreaker at gatherings. The people who get the reference are my kind of people humorwise.
Okay, you got me. Please translate it for the rest of us.
Excellent suggestion . . . of course libs would be too stupid to know what you were talking about.
First the Liberals/Progressives invented the demand for the use of many of the terms - like “ethnic”, “person of color” and others - that now that they don’t own them anymore, they want them to part of a new “banned words” list.
In truth, “ethnic” means nothing other than characterizing a person who belongs “to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition” (so says Google). That characterization is NOT pejorative, unless the person who thinks it is is trying to destroy true diversity as part of the Left’s political agenda for a mono-culture in which any true diversity of people, in values or historical background does not exist.
They invented “person of color” so THEY could identify groups deserving of their special rights and dependencies because whatever they were they were “non-white”.
Why those cotton pickin naggers at the NYT.
May I suggest “criminal alien ?”
“The people who get the reference are my kind of people humorwise.”
That’s one thing I appreciate about FR; so many FUNNY Freepers. :)
