Two reasons that make me think we might be pretty far away:

We haven’t had even 65% eligible voter turnout since 1908, way less for local and state elections. 2016 had less eligible voter turnout than in 2008 and 2012. Seems like more folks would try deigning to vote before trying sustained hardship through civil unrest.

Our poorest are also the most likely to be obese. I think that is something that has never happened before. Hard to imagine sustained civil unrest or civil war while that is the case. I guess there could be a first time.

We are headed for a real civil war.

You could be right, and by that I mean a real civil war. Not another War Between the States.

In a true civil war, you have citizens (the 'civilians') fighting against either the state or against other civilians. What we had in 1861 was a war between sovereign states - or at least, between organizations claiming to be sovereign states. It was actually a revolutionary war, just as when the 13 colonies/states rebelled against England. But Lincoln and the North (including all the big newspapers) didn't want to accept the basic idea that the states could leave the union, so they refused to recognize it as anything except a citizen ('civilian') uprising.

So, what we might face is riots spreading out of control, followed by suppression (perhaps by the military). In other words, a true civil war. Or we might have citizens rioting and others defending with the government standing by 'clutching its pearls'. But what I think is likely is expanding civil disorder, not succession of states from the Union.

Or not. If Trump's reforms, including reining in the bureaucratic regulatory state, work then we might see this whole temper tantrum run out of steam. There will be an obvious way to tell. If the riots continue and are (finally) met by armed force from other citizens (civilians), then we might see a true civil war.

It won't last long. The snowflakes will melt, not matter how much money Soros pays them. But if the government does nothing and the rioters keep to the areas already dominated by collectivists (such as California, or any big city), then they can riot for as long as they want and it won't really be a 'war.'

We really are, and it saddens me. The Trump presidency is the last chance to govern. They won’t let us. They are hateful and seek violence. This will be ugly. Though we have the guns, we don’t have the will to fight them. Big talk on message boards means nothing.

Perhaps you are right, Luke21, perhaps we do not have the stomach to take up arms and actually fire upon others. Only time will tell. However, when you poke a sleeping dog with a stick long enough... We will see. For the sake of our country I pray it does not come to that.
