A flat-pack refugee shelter developed by Ikea and the United Nations has been named the best design of 2016.

Awarded the Beazley Design of the Year award, presented by the Design Museum in London, the modular Better Shelter is made from recyclable plastic, comprises only 68 components, and can be assembled in as few as four hours.

Each structure is large enough to house a family of five, and includes a solar panel to power lights and charge devices. Since production started in 2015, 16,000 units have been delivered to countries around the world including Iraq, Djibouti, Greece and Niger, to be used as homes, temporary clinics and offices....

I know many here will focus on demeaning this by any angle.

I’d rather view it as a conservative capitalist success:
For a scant 4-digit $, sufficient & self-powering minimal housing can be delivered nearly anywhere. This helps eviscerate the Leftist agenda to drain taxpayer pockets by demands for funding luxuries thru confiscation. A valid need is met at low cost, giving poor no excuse to get started in climbing the ladder of productivity themselves.

Yes the U.N. was involved; Ikea leveraged what they could to craft a product to meet a market.

Insanity

This would be a first world solution to a third world problem. But the problem is the third world problem can't afford the first world solution.

I saw them and instantly thought disaster relief. Temporary housing for immediate help. At least there is a roof, a place to sleep, and a way to charge a phone to help you keep up with the news during an emergency. Privacy and a bit of safety for a family. I think it’s awesome!

For the intended market, this isn’t about entertainment, it’s survival & productivity. With just a $20 smartphone, the solar charger, and a community WiFi access point, they get worldwide communications, endless books, and instant publication free.

Crikey! Those high falutin' design jurors don't get out much, do they.

Any Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. has tons of these in various sizes and configurations, all in flat boxes.

And without looking like a collection of port-a-potties.

Can't help but notice that the winning design didn't quite get the waterproof roof thing right. Not to worry, some other NGO has the tarp concession. Iranian Imams provide the 24hr a daily for the wi-fi connections featuring 5 times a day prayer calls and the perennial favorite M.E. show, "Great Satan & Little Satan" with all new episodes.

Oh, I have no problem if that’s what they’re really using the devices for, versus drug deals or playing games all day versus trying to better themselves and look for work. ;)
