Erie Insurance plans $135 million expansion, 600 new jobs (PA)

Tom Hagen, chairman of Erie Insurance, remembers the exact spot his small desk occupied when he went to work at the company in 1953.

Standing in that same building - now the Erie Insurance Heritage Center - Hagen on Friday said the small office building was crowded at the time with 100 employees.

Sixty-three years later, local employment has grown to 2,889 and problems with crowding persist.

The company announced a solution to that Friday morning - a plan to invest $135 million in a 346,000-square-foot building that's expected to make room to add another 600 employees, and possibly make the company Erie County's largest employer. The proposed building is more than three times as large as Erie's Bayfront Convention Center and ranks as one of the single most expensive construction projects in Erie history.

It's a project that's been in the works for a couple years.

But CEO Timothy G. NeCastro said Friday that he felt chills announcing the plans aloud and weighing the significance of the moment, which calls for building a seven-story building next to the Heritage Center on East Sixth Street, facing the existing corporate headquarters.

"Our commitment to Erie has really never wavered," he said. "I am very excited and I know you are, too."

The problem of space has been on the minds of company officials for several years now. Addressing the issue, which began under the direction of former CEO Terry Cavanaugh, was especially important at a company that values collaboration, said NeCastro, who was named CEO earlier this year....

Jobs are returning to the US — terrific. Now is also the time to wake up that sleeping giant of 90 million jobless Americans, many of whom have been out of work for years and have lost hope.

As a former Chautauqua County NYS resident, I think the headline needs to be revised. The headquarters is actually in Erie, PA according to the article.

So Erie, PA is actually going to get the new jobs, not NYS. I am glad the jobs are coming anyway, since many WNY folks live close enough to Erie to commute, if they are dumb enough to pay NY taxes, instead of lower PA taxes.

Glad they worked well for you.

Last year I had engine problems and needed to be towed. They raised my rates and wanted me to take classes to drop the rates. Since I’m on dial up, they decided that I could not do the classes. Then this year I junked one car in August. Instead of giving me a refund, they sent me a bill in October for the last quarterly payment.

I’m dropping them.

I think the Erie County reference might be the problem. Buffalo is located in Erie County (NY).

You are right. Buffalo is in Erie County, just to the northeast of Chautauqua County, the latter bordering on Erie PA.

Snow belt territory, all.
