SHOULD TRUMP PROMOTE PUERTO RICAN INDEPENDENCE?

Posted on 11/03/2016 9:47:20 PM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

He should. The island is a burden. He can make it the jewell of Latin America as the Castro's and Maduro's are on the run. Dump out all the Puerto Ricans in our jails. Independence is in the heart.

He could make it a gambling mecca—on the model of Indian casinos. Everyone would get a piece of the action.

"There are 3.7 million American citizens living in Puerto Rico. As citizens, they should be entitled to determine for themselves their political status. I am firmly committed to the process where Puerto Ricans might resolve their status according to Constitutional and Congressional protocols. I believe the people of Puerto Rico deserve a process of status self-determination that gives them a fair and unambiguous choice on this matter. As president I will do my part to insure that Congress follows the Constitution. The will of the Puerto Rican people in any status referendum should be considered as Congress follows through on any desired change in status for Puerto Rico, including statehood.'

Trump statement on Puerto Rico.

If he is elected, yes, he should just to bring the issue up for national discussion. I have long suspected that eventually, Puerto Rico or Brazil will become a part of the United States. This will be brought up in a decade or two as a way to replace the lower class working population in this country.

Many who meet that description now will have retired. The Millenials won’t be having enough babies to fully repopulate. The debates will be fierce, due to Brazils crooked governments, police on the take, large number of gangs and violent criminals. I know it sounds like Chicago.

They have self determination and if they would elect to be independent, the Puerto Ricans would not lose their US citizenship.

They would then all move to Florida.

“I think we should cut them off like partially severed limb.”

Unless that is what Puerto Rico wants, we would never cut them off.

Good Heavens - YES!
Get those lazy dysfunctional ungrateful parasites off of us, once and for all.
Diversity of lower class, morals, and aptitude if NOT our strength.

1. Most puerto ricans do not want independence -- this has been proven time and again.

2. He should give the bleak choice: statehood or independence, no "business as usual" -- if he DOES, then the supermajority of puerto ricans will vote for statehood

3. if he unilaterally decides to give it independence even if it doesn't want it, then he cannot toss out the puerto Ricans already in the US -- they came legally and they would be granted the opportunity to become citizens, which the majority would take

They have an ideal situation as it is-- all the benefits of citizenship without the obligations. They can immigrate anywhere here at anytime for any reason. They can suckle off Uncle Sam's titty.

What rational person would give that up for statehood or independence?

FWIW, my wife's paternal grandparents came here from Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s latest gambit is massive television advertising pushing the “paradise” meme.

I want to know who falls for that stuff, because I have a bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn I want to sell them.

It could be the model for Latin America except it’s crowded down there. Buy that chunk of barren land in Brazil and let them develop it.

The Puerto Rican people have voted against it, repeatedly IIRC.
