Pundits often talk about the white vote, but its more complicated than that. Voters who say they have German or Italian heritage lean most heavily to Trump and the GOP, a poll run for BuzzFeed News reveals.
Race and ethnicity have been a constant backdrop to the 2016 presidential election, thanks to Donald Trumps provocative comments on immigrants, black communities, and an American-born judge he called Mexican.
Yet in all the slicing and dicing of voting intentions by key demographic groups, the white vote has largely been considered as a single ethnic block until now.
A new poll run for BuzzFeed News, which delves into white voters self-reported ancestry, reveals surprising diversity in their political outlook. White voters who identify most strongly with their German or Italian heritage strongly support Trump, whereas those who self-identify as Irish, English, or Scottish are more evenly split between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Between September 22 and October 2 (notably, before the bombshell video of Trump making lewd comments about women), as part of its regular online political poll, the survey firm Morning Consult asked more than 5,000 registered voters to check which of the most common ancestry categories recorded by the Census Bureau applied to them, and also to pick the one ancestry they identified with most....

Let's all sing: Donald, Donald über alles...
I am wondering if anyone polls the Poles.
Meine urgroßelternn sind Deutsches.
I know a lot of Greeks (besides me) that will be voting Trump. I also know quite a few blacks and hispanics that will support Trump as well.
He’s just a regular guy. Warts and all. Ain’t trying to be anything else
Weren’t the judges parents illegals?
Wow, if the ethnic Japanese also loved Trump the old WWII axis would be back together. Who knew!
:-)
IDK if you could resist my Grandmother’s schnitzel, or her goulash.
I have said this long time ago, Trump’s secret weapon in the Midwest is the ethic German voters. That’s why he will take OH, WI and perhaps, PA.
I doubt I could!
Some groups have a strong cultural work ethic.
I theorize living where food and shelter must be gathered ahead of cold winters inçulate this behavior.
Evidently they dug a little more deeply than just generic “white” in their questioning. But you’re right, white people don’t normally do that. I am half German. My surname is very uncommon in the U.S. its origins aren’t obvious, so I’ll have people ask me about it. A guest at my son’s wedding asked me. That’s about the only time it comes up, though.
The strength of German identity might depend on where you are, though. There used to be a saying that in southwestern Illinois and southeastern Missouri, you had three kinds of towns: Lutheran towns, Evangelical and Reformed towns, and German Catholic towns. You see it in the names of the towns: Darmstadt, Millstadt, Bremen, Paderborn, Freeburg. Those places are largely German today. There are German taverns, restaurants, and festivals. The town my father now lives in has a vehicle tax sticker with the drawing of a rotund German fellow in lederhosen and an Alpine hat. When I visit my father and do business in town, I see the heritage in the blond hair, blue eyes, and rosy cheeks of the people.
Identity might also depend on how far you’re removed from immigrant ancestors. My great-grandparents came to America about 130 years ago. My grandfather was born in Illinois but didn’t learn English until he was in his teens. I remember the peculiar accents of the people of his generation, and it wasn’t unusual to hear them refer to each other as “an old Dutchman.” Family members of my generation, of course, have that identity significantly lessened.
My wife is a second-generation American of Serbian descent. What I just wrote is certainly true of Serbs I have met through her. They are definitely white, but they identify primarily as Serbs, and they don’t mind telling you.
We are Sausage-Americans. It doesn't get any wurst than that.
we are pretty ethnic on Staten Island. I’m pretty sure that ethnicity is a phenomenon really only found on the Northeast Coast. But we are all true blooded Americans first. unless other groups are playing Dominick the Italian Christmas donkey on Christmas Eve and play the Tarantella at every wedding. Fully half of my friends still speak fluent italian :)
Agreed. Strong presence in the Midwest.
