Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson on Tuesday defended his lack of knowledge of world affairs, suggesting on MSNBC that foreign policy expertise, or even an understanding of where international leaders are from, is what leads to military conflict.
You know what? The fact that somebody can dot the is and cross the ts on a foreign leaders geographic location then allows them to put our military in harms way, Johnson told MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell.
The former New Mexico governor has been widely panned for a pair of foreign policy gaffes that have weighed down his long-shot candidacy. First, Johnson responded to a question on MSNBCs Morning Joe about the ongoing civil war in Syria by asking his questioner, What is Aleppo?
His inability to recognize Syrias largest city, and the epicenter of its humanitarian crisis, was compounded last week in another MSNBC appearance when host Chris Matthews asked Johnson to name one foreign leader that you respect and look up to. Johnson could not name one and admitted that he was having another Aleppo moment.
Five days after the interview, Andrea, I still cant think of a world leader that I respect, Johnson said Tuesday. I mean, having never been involved in politics before, I will tell you I held a lot of people in this country on pedestals thinking they were role models. I got to meet them up front and personal and found out they were empty suits. They werent about issues. They werent about doing what was best. They were about getting reelected.

I’m okay with Johnson not knowing the details on Aleppo. He doesn’t need to know if he’s not planning on interfering, but he should know geography and trade. Even Libertarians have to deal with other countries.
He will know where all the good pot is grown however
What is this guy, 11 years old?
The old adage, it takes one to know one comes to mind.
I wonder if he asked Andrea over for bongs hits afterwards.
THAT is what passes for a defense from this guy!
If ignorance is bliss, he’s the happiest man on earth.
Excellent summary!
That he was NM’s governor doesn’t speak well of NM’s mentality.
Just the sort of remark to endear the pothead/Grateful Dead/Losertarian voters to him even more.
To be fair, I understand he did a much better job at gooberner here than what he's currently representing in public.
That being said, this is the state that elected Bill "Choo-Choo" Richardson after the Clinton scandals, so, yeah, there are a bunch of morons here.
If asked that question, his response would probably be: "Cleveland and San Diego."
Gary Johnson: I’m so stupid, I should be POTUS.
What a crazy a$$!
Ignorance is knowledge. Etc, etc, a la Orwell.
If you say so. A few days ago he went creepy crazy wiggling his tongue at a reporter. He’s been a real weirdo from the day he threw his hat in the ring.
I honestly think he's actually developed mental problems, or there's some other issue.
I have only been here since 2005, Johnson was out of office at that point. Folks here pretty much said he was a decent governor, and a nice guy. Even the talk radio guys here remember him as being better than this.
I don't know. I know people can certainly change. I've known really nice, upstanding people who just went completely off their rockers.
Wow. I mean, he’s been kind of clueless, but this is just sad.
So far, the only person running this cycle that really seems like a reasonable pick is Mike Pence, fortunately he’s on our ticket.
...and to think this fool was a governor.
I’m not at all upset that he can’t instantly pinpoint every insignificant crapwad of a country/region on a glove, but his blatant and unapologetic ignorance rivals Obama. And he doesn’t even have the excuse of being raised by a terrorist and his concubine to fall back on.
With this fruitcake replacing Rand I effectively have no party...the Libertarian plank was my last hope after the Republicans fumbled in the Bush era and then lost twice to a mentally deficient shoeshine boy. Johnson can barely attract attract flies let alone young voters and has no criminal mastermind - Shrillary would clean his clock.
