BOOM! SMUG NEWSPAPER EDITORS Endorse Hillary…Phone Lines Blow Up With Subscription CANCELLATIONS

Smug liberal newspapers and tv networks have paid a heavy price for their criticism of Trump. Americans think of Trump as the underdog in this race and there’s nothing worse than piling on the underdog. For these liberal hacks who have been writing their leftist opinions as opposed to real news for decades, they’re about to find out what it means to be considered irrelevant by their former readers…

The subscription cancellations were coming every 10 minutes. Angry readers have been calling in droves.

“We’re feeling the weight of our history,” Phil Boas, the editorial page editor of The Arizona Republic, said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. Until it endorsed Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, the newspaper, founded in 1890, had never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president.

In endorsing Mrs. Clinton, The Republic’s editorial was, by any interpretation, scathing toward her opponent, Donald J. Trump. “Trump responds to criticism with the petulance of verbal spit wads,” the editorial says at one point. “That’s beneath our national dignity.”

The papers lay out different reasons for supporting Mrs. Clinton over Mr. Trump — his lack of political experience versus her established political career, his outbursts and insults versus her steadiness — and some are perhaps more repudiations of Mr. Trump than glowing endorsements of Mrs. Clinton, whose faults are also cited.

For some readers, however, the endorsements proved a step too far. “Certainly, we’ve paid a price for our presidential recommendation,” Mike Wilson, the editor of The Dallas Morning News, told Poynter this month.

Mr. Boas of The Arizona Republic said he expected “a lot of cancellations,” pointing to cancellations at The Cincinnati Enquirer, which like The Republic, is owned by Gannett.

“WHAT, please tell, will we deplorables be using to line the bottom of our bird’s cage or place on the floor to help in house-training our dogs and puppies?”

blank newsprint is still available for purchase on amazon and other websites for wrapping goods for moving (which BTW is far superior to bubble wrap AND cheaper), and training puppies and lining birdcages as well.

“We get the Sunday L.A. Times, not for the content but for the Shopping Coupons. I’m a Coupon clipper from way back.”

Around my neck of Colorado, local newspaper subscriptions have dropped so low that the advertising supplements are now directly mailed in a bundle via USPS. Ironically enough, they’re printed by the local newspaper plant, which I think is now their main source of profit.

Newspaper editors: “We took the ‘high’ road and endorsed a congenital liar, corrupt thief, and avowed traitor. Yes, we knew we’d take some hits in subscriptions, but it was worth it to maintain our ‘principles’.”

Our paper is down to 10 pages of news during the week.

Did I say news? I meant ads and two pages of news;-/

The great irony would be if Trump ended up buying some of these cheap rags for nickels on the dollaf... and making them profitable again.

You can get these and better coupons online now, no need to financially support the local organ of the Communist Party.

Gannet has been feeling a slow death for at least the past five years. The made all their reporters and editors reapply for their jobs. Departments have been gutted at individual news rooms and instead it is all done off site. The newsrooms are more empty desks than people working.

If you cancel, you incrementally screw their income - they sell advertising based on both the paid subscriber membership numbers and on overall circulation including ‘complimentary’ subscriptions. The more they have of both, the more they can and do ask per day per column inch of ad.

If you cancel your subscription, that decrements those numbers. Who knows? Your cancellation may be the one that drops them into a lower tier pricing structure because their ‘eyeballs per day’ number will have dropped that far.

Failing that, I hear that in some cases the LAT is so desperate to keep their circulation numbers up in certain areas they will refund your money and give you the rest of your subscription free if you call and complain.

The AZ Republic used to be a conservative paper owned by the Pulliam family that covered the entire state. Then the last of the Pulliams sold it to Gannett (who already owned the NBC station in PHX) in the 90s. Both have gone into the toilet ratings and circulation-wise. The paper runs the same article several times in one week, is full of typos, and has turned into a leftist local version of USA Today, with a few local pages covering mostly Central Phoenix.

Someone posted a comment a few days ago speculating that these newspapers are going into the crapper anyway, so they're doing this just to have an excuse for why they're going out of business. The cavalier attitude you see from the people in these articles ("We expect to see a lot of cancellations," etc.) is bizarre, to say the least. You wouldn't see that attitude in any normal business, would you?

"We knew we'd lose a lot of customers, but we decided to start using dog meat in our Big Macs anyway."

WTF?

“Trump responds to criticism with the petulance of verbal spit wads,” the editorial says at one point. “That’s beneath our national dignity.”

Yeah, because the other candidate, the beast, just destroys their lives and, in some cases, has them killed. That's so much closer to our "national dignity".

You can get local sale papers like the Peddler here or Thrifty Nickel in other areas, check around if you need it for bird cage liners or puppy training.

Newspapers have been in decline since the 90’s, primarily due to the availability of more honest alternative news sources online.

I noticed many had adopted a narrower format at least 15 years ago. Long gone are the full size newspapers of my youth. The Houston Chronicle and Post have both gotten smaller and narrower. I had a paper route for the Houston Post in the late 70’s, the Sunday edition was about an inch thick. Now it’s barely over half that. And narrower.

I predicted the Internet would kill printed news in the mid 90’s when I saw so many news websites opening up and more people all the time migrating to that format. It’s basically cheaper, if you figure it as a part of your Internet usage, available in seconds 24/7 without a trip to the store or a newspaper rack, no more pile of newspapers in the laundry room or garage to deal with every week, and quite often, more accurate news is available online.

Newspapers were already seeing reduced subscriptions as early as 1995. Sales at the corner news stand or machine were still doing ok, but had seen a moderate reduction. Now I’m pretty sure they’re close to panic mode. I haven’t bought a newspaper since Obama announced he was sending troops to Afghanistan after promising no more wars while campaigning. Only bought it then because I didn’t have an Internet connection at the time and didn’t plan on a trip to the local library to get online with their free wireless.

That’s something many people don’t know, most public libraries have free wireless available to the public, and in many cases you can just park outside and get online in your car with a laptop. I’ve used libraries in a dozen cities while traveling. Many also have computers inside you can use. With those, access is limited in most cases. No porn, obviously, which makes sense, but no chatrooms and in some cases no public forums like this one. In one case I couldn’t even check my gmail account, gmail blocked.

I’m surprised another newspaper decided to endorse Clinton after what happened in Dallas. Their mistake was well publicized, or I thought so. Even if it wasn’t, it seems they would be keeping a close eye on what was happening in the newspaper business. I would if I were running one. Then if I saw a newspaper go belly up or close to it as a result of a political endorsement, I wouldn’t even think about it for my paper. I guess stupidity knows no bounds...

Another Trump Effect.
