Ted Cruz and other Republicans are barreling toward a September showdown with the White House over its plan to give up oversight of the internet, as the Obama administration tries to rally support from the tech and telecom industries.
GOP lawmakers have long warned that the administration's plan to relinquish its authority over ICANN, the global nonprofit that manages the internet's domain name system, could give authoritarian countries like China and Russia an opening to make an online power grab. Now, as the actual date of the transition approaches Oct. 1 Republicans are looking at throwing up new obstacles.
"Today our country faces a threat to the internet as we know it. In 22 short days, if Congress fails to act, the Obama administration intends to give away the internet to an international body akin to the United Nations," Cruz said in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday. "I rise today to discuss the significant, irreparable damage this proposed internet giveaway could wreak not only on our nation but on free speech across the world."
Cruz is pledging to make the issue his primary focus this month. He's already launched a website warning about the dangers of the administration's strategy, complete with a countdown clock against a black background. And he's scheduled a hearing of the Senate Judiciary oversight subcommittee he chairs next week to investigate the possible dangers of the plan.
Meanwhile, Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) said Wednesday that language to delay the transition could be included in the continuing resolution to fund the government past this month. And House Republicans are considering their options in the coming appropriations bill, a GOP aide confirmed this week.
I dont think the foundation has been appropriately laid for this, Thune said in an interview.

I should do just fine with Feinstein, Boxer, Pelosi and Moonbeam then. /s
However, I have friends and relatiaves in other states who can make more of an impact. Just pass the word along.
I’m just having a hard time understanding why this is even a question.
Have our representatives already been deluged by phone calls from people for the giveaway? I can only assume so, since apparently everyone other than Ted Cruz doesn’t a word one to say about it.
Why doesn’t our government also surrender control of the US Treasury to the UN while they are at it?
How about control of the US Armed Forces as well?
LOL. You’re as screwed as I am!
You have no idea what I do, or what I have done. And along with being skeptical this is anything other than a fund raising ruse or smoke and mirrors, I am seriously concerned Cruz is going to create a media crisis to hurt Trumps presidential aspirations. And I am/was a Cruz supporter.
However, you seem to be implying that it is a foolish waste of time and effort for anyone else to do such a simple thing as even pick up the phone or write an email...
MOST OF THE TIME, AN EMAIL OR PHONE CALL MIGHT NOT MATTER, BUT IT IS ELECTION SEASON, SO SOME OF OUR “REPRESENTATIVES” NEED TO LISTEN....TO SAVE THEIR BUTTS.
Frankly, the fact that Cruz is heading the charge is of little importance to me...IF THE EASTER BUNNY IS LEADING THE CHARGE TO STOP THE INTERNET TRANSFER TO THE UN, I SUPPORT HIM.
I would appreciate a private Freepmail regarding theories of a Cruz caused media crisis to hurt Trump. I cannot see that happening, but I could be wrong. I truly hope that is not the motivation of Cruz—tho I am sure it is to shine spotlight on him and aid his re-election.
I am not a Cruz supporter and would never fall prey to a fundraising ruse.
Good to know you may have done something or might tho.

It is election season, so I am hoping they will be more responsive than usual.
I am not cheer-leading for our Senators in DC they are for the most part most of the time useless, but they are the best we have got for now and the only line of defense against what could be a freedom-limiting power grab by the UN.
Pretty mach anything Barry wants to do is something I don’t want to happen.
I called Cruz, Cornyn and my congressman today about this.
Of course Cruz office is behind effort to stop it and I would expect a strong passionate person on other end...
Wondering about Cornyn and your congressman?

I’d be more impressed if he came out and backed Trump fully.
Id be more impressed if he came out and backed Trump fully.
Cruz needs to get more involved and cover one of Trumps flanks.
It is all for show.
HUH???
The fact that Cruz is leading the charge to fight Obama really does not matter. Oh and I NEVER supported Cruz...even when FR was “Cruz Country.”
I don’t care if the Tooth Fairy is leading the charge to stop the UN Internet giveaway. This transfer of power needs to be stopped...Fact that Cruz is leading it is really not the relevant issue here.
People better get off their butts and at least make a call or we will be begging Brussels to keep Free Republic open.
Cruz needs to get more involved and cover one of Trumps flanks.
However just as important is our action as citizens to stop the administration facilitating the UN takeover of the Internet!
PEOPLE NEED TO CONTACT THEIR CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS...This is election season, they might just pay attention for this short election season!
Definitely, call your members of Congress. (202) 224-3121. But also, get on their websites and call the district offices. To them, 10 calls seem like 100 or more. They’ll be complaining that they had to answer the phone about this all day. (They’re used to doing customer service.)
Then follow it up with an email.
And I know this will get me in trouble, but I also intend to call Senator Cruz and thank him for leading this fight.
