Remember when Zimbabwe used to be Rhodesia?
Theres a lesson, or two, in here somewhere: No One Is Safe: Zimbabwe Threatens to Seize Farms of Party Defectors. Thats right: first they came for the white mens farms:
And the blacks didnt object because, well, they werent white. Now theyre coming for the farms of black-men-who-disagree-with-the-government-policies. Thats how it always goes.
And as pointed out by the Instapundit:
Hey, it was over a decade ago when Nick Kristof reported that Zimbabweans were nostalgic for the days of white rule:
An elderly peasant in another village, Makupila Muzamba, said that hunger today is worse than +ever before in his seven decades or so, and said: I want the white mans government to come back. Even if whites were oppressing us, we could get jobs and things were cheap compared to today.
His wife, Mugombo Mudenda, remembered that as a younger woman she used to eat meat, drink tea, use sugar and buy soap. But now she cannot even afford corn gruel. I miss the days of white rule, she said.
And things have only gotten worse since. But theyre right to be nostalgic: International opinion would never stand for a white government that treated blacks so badly. For Mugabe, though, it just yawns.
Gee, its not been even 8 full years here in America butt I think Americans are getting a little nostalgic for the days of white rule too.
Yes, Mr. Jefferson, I do. Does that make me a racist?

It’s not a black-white thing. It is a Northern European protestant work ethic thing. To the extent that black African countries emulate the protestant work ethic of the 17th-18th century Dutch and English, they will be successful!
Cold winters ('The Ant & the Grasshopper")
Strong influence of the Gospel on the culture (treatment of others, honesty & integrity) [similar cultural attitudes also apply, i.e. Japan]
Northern European protestant work ethic
There are exceptions - Singapore, for one - but the basic principles seem to apply
Turns out in Africa you can't have a decent capitalist system without the former, though. Look at South Africa. They had a space program and pioneered the heart transplant, both amazing accomplishments. Now it's just another gang-run mobocracy. Not every group is capable of even sustaining a high functioning society, much less actually raising it up themselves.
No. Capitalism can only exist in a specific type of culture. Historically, many White cultures have been able to sustain forms of free markets. No Black culture has been able to do that. So, they miss Capitalist Whites.
New Caledonia might be another if they don’t screw up their gradual move to independence.
One other aspect of this is the general wasting of the educated class on the African continent by AIDS. A combination of heterosexual transmission and cultural practices that include advertising wealth via the number of women one beds severely impacted the the cohorts of people most likely to sustain a growing middle class who appreciate property rights and could administer infrastructure.
Bobbie has been in control for 36 years. Wish he would die soon so I could piss on his grave. I know the line would be long, but it would be worth it.
Yews, that’s true! It is indisputable that Africa has the bulk of our planets resources. Equatorial climate and the ill effects of colonialism have all combined to relegate the majority of it to 3rd world status. If some African republics could thoroughly inculcate strong Christian values, it would be amazing what could happen.
The U.N. has reported that the life expectancy in Zimbabwe has risen from about 60 years all the way up to about 30. We are fundamentally transforming this country into another success story: Detroit.
South Africa is next.
A non racist question: how many black ruled countries are better off than under a former white (colonial?) rule? Say in terms of GDP per capita or purchasing power per individual. There surely must be some.
Know any black run place where capitalism flourishes, including here in the US?
For capitalism to flourish you need the rule of law.
G’day
No. 44 ‘Rhodesia’ (B) Squadron was a Royal Air Force bomber unit based at R.A.F. Station Waddington, Lincolnshire when you went to the airshow.
And very few Spanish/Latin
I suspected as much.
The air show was at the Air Guard section of the Des Moines, IA., airport. The flight crew had been at the SAC base near Omaha, and local Des Moines radio stations broadcast the takeoff news and the landing.
All did not go perfectly at the arrival. The Vulcan was shifted to the shorter SW wind runway and the big green airplane came in hot.
The pilot realized he was going to overshoot, so he poured on the fuel and lifted off, trailing four black trails of smoke over the downtown area.
He got it down on the second try.
A British officer was spotted talking to the captain about his landing. The pilot’s response was “No problem, sir...no problem, sir.”
The free market can only exist under a stable government operating under the Rule of Law. This is a European invention.
Impossible. Black run nations are the wealthiest and most prosperous on earth....
That may be true, but it’s still capitalism that they really miss.
